"Jodorowsky is. . .a director for whom ideas are sensuous entities -- sensuous toys, really, to be played with". Pauline Kael

Largely responsible for creating films that always pushed the boundaries of generic forms, Mexican filmmaker Alexandro Jordorowsky presents worlds in which the surreal lies on the cusp of the familiar, where the fantastical always appears to tap into something remotely comforting. Jordorowsky's cult classic, El Topo [The Mole] plays out as a spaghetti Western that relentlessly blows the lid off anything you have seen before in this genre: nude children on horseback, dwarfs that kill, quiet desert plains that give way to unexpected violence with campy results. While Sergio Leone's Fist Full of Dollars films may be sited as the penultimate works of the genre, El Topo's fantastical imagery and loaded symbolism makes Clint Eastwood's journeys look like a day at Disneyland. Jordorowsky's excessive imagery of contorted bodies and grotesquely humourous human relations suggests the filmmaker is more closely aligned with underground comic artist Robert Crumb than the assortment of filmmkers who worked toward revising the Western genre during the late 60s - early 70s. Informed by Buneuelian sensibilities, El Topo is laden with religious symbolism, citing a barrage of Taoist, Sufi, Buddhist and biblical references couched in the carnivalesque, and as a result, make such philosophical contemplations highly entertaining. Do these strategies suggest a ringleader of countercultural mind-expansion or portentous shock value? This rare screening of El Topo needs to be seen to fully appreciate its place in cinematic history.

Please note: some excessive gore.

Next week, Tuesday June 10th, Shock Corridor Cinema will screen Jordorowsky's most revered film, and follow up to El Topo,

No s**t?!? WHERE did you folks find a copy of this? Almost impossible to get ahold of. This is the flick that almost single handidly started the entire "midnight movie" trend; great stuff!!
Jodorowsky and french illustrator Moebius worked together to create that "Incal" series way back..in Heavy Metal magazine.
Sure would love a copy of this... - Tue, 3 Jun 2003 6:50pm
Anonymous it was great to see this movie in such a large picture. i hadn't seen it for ages and had definatly been yearning it. thanks a lot for showing it alan and giving the lucky peopel there the chance to see it. - Wed, 4 Jun 2003 2:40am
film programer now that i have acquired a copy of El Topo, duplicates should be circulating around town inthe upcoming weeks. keep your eyes peeled.

thanks to those who came out to this exsessive visualization of 60s mind expansion. following next week's screening of jordorowsky's much more polished/relaized, "The Holy Mountain" (1973) the shock corridor cinema program will begin to veer away from late 60s/early 70s narrative cinema.
. . . stay tuned for the return of "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story" (the notorius Barbie Doll Film and debut from filmmaker Todd Haynes), Alain Renais "Night and Fog", "The Perfect Storm" complete with Smell-O-Vision; A Stan Brakhage Memorial screening is also in the works.

curious if there is any interest out there to see Passolini's, "Salo". post or email me with your response. - Wed, 4 Jun 2003 3:47am
