A Witch trial for the late 20th century. Three teenage boys from a small bible belt community in Arkansas are brought to trial for the brutal murders of three young boys despite no physical evidence linking them to the crime. Originally broadcasted on HBO, and playing out in the tradition of Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line, Mr. Death), this investigative documentary meticulously unpacks the sketchy charges of the case, conducting key interviews with supposed "witnesses" and distraught family members of the victims, all of whom are committed to their communities Christian practices. The accused teens, particularly the charismatic Damien Echols are demonized long before the trial; his interest in heavy metal music and the wicca religion inform the communities judgments, contributing to a adamant vilification of the teenagers by the press and community members (some of which give a "performance" that needs to be seen to be believed). The old school Metalica soundtrack highlights the players isolation as they are swept through the U.S. justice system with little recourse or credibility. Although there are many, the film's strengths lie in the way Paradise Lost questions both the inequities within the Justice system and an insular communities' fear of teenage desire for identity and independence (by extension, youth subculture).

This film triggered a mass campaign to free Damien Echols and the other boys (AKA "The West Memphis Three"). For more information on Echols' case and efforts to gain a re-trial go to: http://www.wm3.org/ - Fri, 2 May 2003 3:16pm

film programer better. . .the prejudgement of these teens comes out of fear and dispair of a desperate (impovershed) community. it would appear the folks of rural arkansas are a sampling of those who support the bush administration and its right wing Christian coalition. fear and insecurities within lead to demonizing the Other (metal kids, in the case of the film). - Sun, 4 May 2003 4:52pm
