That was the best show I've seen in Victoria in a really long time, Metric and the Unicorns were alot of fun to watch.

But Hot Hot Heat were amazing, and the crowd really got into the show. I think it's awesome that a local band has made it as far as they have. Way to go guys. - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 10:09am

don't front on luke luke warm/tight tight pants/big big hair/fuck fuck children. aight?

that had to be one of the worst show experiences of my life. i'm sorry if you kids thought having a shopping spree at bluenotes and then "moshing" was a real hip way to break in your distressed denim..but... pushing the whole crowd to the front and then continually staying there (compressing our ribs) is FULLY NOT A GOOD IDEA.

i can't stress enough that even though this was a good ol fashion fun time, it was less the comfortable with everyones sweaty ass all up in there.

ps. the unicorns are incredible. yet agin. much love. - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 11:50am

[+] what did you expect if you were going to be at the front?

My biggest complaint with this show is for the way it was run. Tickets said doors at 7:30. Got there at around 8:15 and had to wait in line long enough that we completely missed the Unicorns. They were making people check coats that really didn't need to be checked (they tried to get a person I was with to check her sweatshirt) and the security or bouncers or whatever were stopping the line every few minutes even though it didn't really need it, so it slowed everything down even more. - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 12:30pm

Believe it or not I have been to one or two shows before, and have never had to wait outside so long that I've missed a band's entire set. If they wanted to have bands start when they did, and they were going to stop the line every couple minutes and make people wait outside for so long, they should have had the doors open earlier. - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 12:52pm

Fuk, the owner of that venue is a geek, and he just likes to keep a long lineup outside so his club looks good. Pretty fuk'n silly concidering the thing was sold-out anyway.

I always thought Soundgarden was taking over that establishment? Yeah, I really dislike Sugar, perhaps I'm just getting too old, and have no patience for what goes on down there. Then again, that's just my opinion. - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 1:56pm

I was there, got there around 7:00 and got into the club in time to see the whole unircorn set.

I wasnt a big fan of em, i prefferred Metric a lot more, thoroughly enjoyed their set.

HHH were simply amazing, talk about energy. Yah the moshing in the middle was kinda nuts but hey HHH were loving it, Metric was lovin it, the fans were loving it, sounds like your just gettin a little too old [+] if not then i dunno, go stand up in rafters if you dont want things gettin rough around you.

I wasnt really part of the most at all, but near the end of HHH set i pushed my way to the front so i could have prime spot for their encore. overall that was a damn good show! - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 7:01pm

i totally love how i'm 17.
maybe i do sound to old, i guess i was looking forward to dancing at the show. instead i was having trouble breathing. wonderful energy from all the bands, no doubt about that. the kids need to learn some ettiquette or something though... seriously.
i can appreciate moshing, i mosh harder than hell... but synthpop is more dancey than the pop-punk-jump-up-and-down stuff that was rubbing me up and down allllll night.

i have to agree with the kid with the [+} name thing.the unicorns were amazing and had very good sence of humours, after the show i saw them standing around because i couldent get out of the hipster palace for a hour after hot hot heats set.and i went up to them and said"huddel, notice how i'm not wearing socks, thats becasue you rocked them RIGHT OFF!" and they looked at my feet, laughed, and then huged me.and i was verry much looking forward to danceing also, but these werid kids desided to "mosh"(more or less ram people face's outside in).sence i had no room to dance i thought hell.and went in,i mosh like a beast normaly..but i couldent quite.they were arngy, its happy music, they were smelly, its hot hot heat, they were rude and hip.more or less i left the popmosh when a huge brut desided he should punch a 4 foot 11 girl in the mouth(me) and my tooth went right through my lip.now this is something i would be proud of if it wasent a popmosh to hot hot bloody heat.steve bay's hair is bigger, and the bass player got shorter.good show.pisswhole of a croud. - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 8:56pm

Wow, I guess I wasn't the only one......

Charging for a mandatory coat check? Filtering us in slowly so we miss half of The Unicorns' set even though they don't have to worry about flooding the bar or keeping a lineup to look cool? Weak sauce......

I'm really turning into a crusty old man...... But all my complaints have been covered.....

The Unicorns rocked, Metric rocked and their lead singer is a fox, and Hot Hot Heat, well, rocked.......

Though it was a little disconcerting having girls 5 years to my junior and therefore very underage squished up against me on all sides....... Far more disturbing than you may think...... - Sun, 16 Nov 2003 10:35pm

coat check was a pain in the pisser.they made my friend check his scarf.and at the door when they asked me to open my bag i did and he said ok go in and dident even look inside.if i had goten there anylater i would probaly have missed metric too.i caught the last 4 songs by the unicorns, dident please considering i was only there to really see them and metric.while at the coat check the huge-ass man was trying to get me to check my stuff so i put my jacket in my bag and walked past him,6 dollers or 2 jackets and a bag?.i strongly think everyone should have done this because he dident even notice!the whole show was good band wise.did you feel as tho you were shopping in some bad light mall?i would have enjoyed a room of twinks then a room of tryhards.and what was this shit about playing michale jackson right after HHH?.high school dance all of a sudden?. - Mon, 17 Nov 2003 10:05am

I can't stand with these jellybones...

I agree with mr. [+} and chloe. I was looking forward to seeing The Unicorns and Hot Hot Heat again, and TOGETHER. I've had a great time dancing at their shows in the past, but it was impossible this time if I actually wanted to see the bands. Kids were practically going to rip my shirt off the way they were clawing and flattening me (and all the rest of you who were near the front in that globular mass).

Still, I enjoyed the audial aspect of it all. I just can't help thinking that my experience could have been that much better if I hadn't had to worry about keeping my balance the whole time.

ps. I missed a huge chunk of the unicorns too. - Mon, 17 Nov 2003 2:24pm

You think the fucks at Sugar would learn from experience. Once when the DayGlos played there they had a "mandatory coat check" there as well but of course the brain dead staff were too stupid to actually CHECK people's coat tags when they left so about 20 people (mostly women) had their (mostly very expensive) coats ripped off which, as you might expect, caused something of a scene there, so the cunt bouncers CALLED THE POLICE who told everybody to fuck off. I've never paid to go there since and I refuse to "check" my coat unless I get concrete assurances that it won't be given to just anybody later in the show (you think these North Star jackets grow on trees?). What do you expect from a bunch of coked out fools whose primary clientele are whores most nights. - Tue, 18 Nov 2003 6:53am

I don't see why people pay for a mandatory coat check. If you make me check my coat, then fine, but I sure as fuck will NOT pay for it. If you won't check my coat without my $2, then fuck off I'll just wear it. The coat check was definitely one of the major things that slowed the line down so much. - Tue, 18 Nov 2003 8:50am

Hey Zippgunn, maybe you should check into your vast knowledge of the local scene and you'll realize that the dayglos didn't play sugar, they played a previous venue that was there, so how could the current management learn from that?

And as we've all read you never pay to get into anything because you're no one should make money of a concert, especially a bar right? And last but not least, those bastards at sugar hey, imagine that, making their venue a viable alternative to say Legends for a larger show, I hope they rot in hell for doing that (yes, a little sarcasm) - Tue, 18 Nov 2003 10:41am

Hey Zippgun, as we all know you're a walking encyclopedia about music, the business, whats wrong with it, and of course the local scene. So, with all this vast knowledge of yours how come you can't figure out that the dayglos didn't play at Sugar, they played at a different club that just happened to be in the same building in the past. Having said that, how could the current management possibly learn from that?

As we all know because you state it over and over again, you never pay to get into anything because you don't believe that anyone should make any money on anything. So I guess we should all think like you and hope that Sugar rots in hell, I mean, who do those people think they are making their venue available as a viable alternative to legends for larger shows, the bastards, spending money on stage and barricades and sound. Maybe the vast fortune Zippgun has amassed, he will open his own venue and everything will be free and no one will make money and we can all live happily ever after. - Tue, 18 Nov 2003 10:44am

The reason for the mandatory coat-checking was due to a shooting that happened last weekend apparently. Sugar's owners paid big bucks to keep it out of the news. - Tue, 18 Nov 2003 12:06pm

Show Review-

The Unicorns-Missed part of their set but managed to skip the line by a block so I didn't miss the whole thing, their P.I.M.P. cover was excellent and the rest of their set was fun too.

Metric-As a friend pointed out, the vocalist really made the band, gorgeous and a pretty good singer too. They were entertaining and were actually the band I went to see, I was impressed.

Hot Hot Heat-First off-there was no such thing as a mosh anywhere to be seen, if you think it was a mosh then you are a fucking uptight moron. What we saw was simple pogoing and surging by fans who wanted to get closer to one of their favourite bands. As for a review, the opening bands outshone Hot Hot Heat and I don't think they would have been as fun if I hadn't been second row, it was fun but I can't help but thinking that they're starting to get played out. Their sound was fun for a while but now everyone has heard it and it isn't as exciting and fun as it once was.

Sugar Review-I thought that for once they may open everything up on time and get people in the club as there was a set start time for the show, I was sadly mistaken. I got there and there was a line-up that was at least two blocks in and people were not getting in quickly. Jumping the line solved that problem but then I got inside and after being frisked there is still a mandatory coat check, which I have to pay for. That was total bullshit in my opinion, okay fine it's an all ages show, you don't want drunken hooliganism but if you're going to check my coat, don't make me pay for it when I don't want it checked. My advice is when going to shows at Sugar, go at least an hour after the advertised door time. - Tue, 18 Nov 2003 12:14pm

I saw that sun (no-kids allowed) show onacounta kids make me nervous. Sounds like the exact same shit sans-pogo: the crusty old fuks are too shity to sweat, I guess.

Fuckers didn't play any old shit either. Just ass well, crowd seemed like a buncha twinky bandage-fans mostly. In fact, the only people I recognized were hiding on some hyper-elite balcony that I didn't know how to access.

PS coat check sucks my ass, and made it take 1/2h to escape after the show (well... 10min, but I budged) - Wed, 19 Nov 2003 9:31am

Sugar is easily the worst club in town for acoustics, miserable staff, shitty overpriced drinks and, shall we say, extracurricular activities. And I actually DO pay to get into most shows basically as a matter of principle. It's been this way through countless incarnations ever since I first became aware of the location's existance as New York New York, then Wastelands, Side Door and a bunch of other places that I can't remember the names of. I say burn it to the fucking ground, preferably with all the owners and staff in it. You could probably snort that ashes and get off. - Sat, 22 Nov 2003 6:54pm
