I'm going because I promised, but damnit metalheads better at least talk with one another tonight, if not cuddle. - Fri, 19 Dec 2008 12:15pm

ok, zillionth try trying to reassemble/repost this:

Missed ms, oops. And I know a couple of the LC guys so I'm stoked for them, but for whatever reasons I feel uncomfortable writing about them so I won't. First set in 6 months and with a new drummer (from inhuman), and I think everyone was happy with it.

Reaver from Vic were killer, I totally enjoyed their set and it reminded me that there are all kinds of people stoked about all kinds of music, playing their asses off til they're able to pull it off right (in front of an audience), and loving every minute of it. Its almost worrisome when bands this good come out of nowhere and blow a lot of long time bands/players right off the field.
I'm hoping they'll be back really quick.
I'm sorry about my crappy friends who were into the band, were told the name and started ernestly yelling "Beaver! BEAVER!". That was funny as all hell, but you'll have to excuse them, they're idiots.
I gather Reaver are brand new, so I want to recommend that everyone set your jadedness aside and check them out. It may not be your thing, but you won't be dissappointed.

Grotesquetory were excellent. I don't know anything about these guys, there's no profile up so I kinda just know them from shows. I'm a HUGE fan of that kind of tech/grind, and always thought they as a duo were skilled, but I think the discussion in the Black Dahlia review thread applies here where its technicality vs musicality. I suppose a lot of people think that its all tech and no musicality with my favorites Zuckuss & Tendonitis, but I do not agree. I think there's a lot of care put into structure & composition and variety - and dare I say it, melody, of sorts.
Grotesquetory are now fully rounded with the addition of extra players who bring those missing elements into it, and even though my ass was firmly planted on the radiator all night, I thoroughly enjoyed their set and am excited to see some new blood carry on what duncan & jesse do, recognizing that its not all just fast riffing and testosterone fueled wanking (that so many other imitators have pulled off so poorly). They ended the set without the guitarist, which like it did way back sounded pretty cool for a little while, but eventually became somewhat repetitive and boring.
I'm stoked about this new guitarist, seems like a good guy too - I'm thinking he's in other bands I've seen, but I can't remember.

Anyway, it was big night for me because a few people were there who i'm really fond of and who I actually got a chance to talk with, which doesn't always happen. I've come through a couple of weeks of grueling work with Nev on the sites, plus my day job, and parties & shows, and with the scary cold and xmas downtime coming, I guess i'm getting sentimental and emotional. Laugh down at me all you want (you live vic pieces of crap who've never met me) - maybe I fall once in a while, but at least I get up and at least I still feel.
A good friend pointed out how much of an "emotional investment" I have in these sites, and I think thats true about the fans I see music with and the musicians who play too. Most of them have family or close friends and don't give a crap or even know what we try to do, but I think its almost easier for me that way.
That said one of my favorite players who once told me that these sites are "bullshit" went on about how he thinks I'm cool last night, which was nice cuz I think he's cool, so go figure. And I stayed far away from any girl-hate, so that helped make the night more chill and less tension for everyone else. Friends fed me warm food & hugs & got me home quick and safe. And I just watched crazy people I've known for a long time having fun together, which was awesome.
i'm thinking that'll be my xmas, it was so good, but who knows, powerclown's next week and might bring out some nice people. - Sat, 20 Dec 2008 7:06pm Edited: Sat, 20 Dec 2008 7:13pm

First off I want to thank you Sati so much for your kind words about my band Reaver. We are just starting off (that was our 3rd show ever) but we have huge ambitions and it always makes you feel fucking awesome to hear such positive things about something we are devoting tons of energy to. No matter what happens we try to have a great time on stage and bring some energy and the crowd at the Cobalt made that feat VERY easy. I personally cannot wait for the next chance we get to play in Vancouver.

As for the rest of the show (which I caught the whole thing) here's my recap:

Morbid Surgeon brought some straight up death metal to start off the night and I thought they did a pretty good job of facing the daunting task of playing first. These guys all look like they are around 17-18.. made me wish I had started gigging that early since they are gaining some very valuable "band experience" nice and early. Their vocalist particularly caught my attention, using some alternating very high pitched screams and then super low growls.. all while rocking the winter boots onstage (metal). Unfortunatelly I had a bit of a hard time making some of the parts out sometime so I may have missed some sweet riffing.

Luciferian Conquest was next with the blackened death thrash or whatever you want to call it. Their guitarsit can sure shred.. at points it reminded me of Decapitated in terms of guitar work. The bass player (who I met after and was a really nice guy) had some sweet stage presence too... Looked like they were having a good time up there. I especially liked their song "Hurricane Katrina"(?). Upon hearing the title, Josh, our guitarist immediatelly high'fived the nearest stranger.. thought that was pretty funny.

After us came Grotesquetory who were phenominally skilled musicians. Due to the speed and franticness they were playing a lot of it was hard to make out but it was still mesmerizing to watch the guys play their instruments... There were not many points in the set where their fingers werent a blur. Also, the drumming was fucking intense. They are basically the sonic equivalent to being punched in the gut repeatedly with no respite. I'd have to agree with Sati that I enjoyed the songs with vocals more but it was all pretty sweet.

So ya, to sum it up, it was a great show, tons of fun and we hope to do it again as soon as possible despite the high price (stupid ferry) required to make it there.

The above two posts pretty much sum up how I felt about the show. Thanks for taking the time to write some reviews. It's really nice to have some feedback after making the arduous journey through the -15 something great white north. Thanks to Arnie for putting together a wicked show, and thanks to all the people who didn't go to Dragonforce instead! We'll see you again soon. Cheers, Brandon - Sun, 21 Dec 2008 7:43pm
