As I walked up the stairs to The Commodore I could hear that a band was on the stage. This was The Rebel Spell. For the opening local act they sounded really good. Most times the opening local act at these big shows will sound somewhat hollow because they are more used to playing places like The Cobalt, but The Rebel Spell sounded full. I've seen them a many time before, but was still bummed that I missed half their set.

Next up was The Bronx and to say they were full of energy would be an understatement. The singer jumped around with a giant mischievous grin on his face. It was plain to see that he was having a good time. He also reminded everyone how long it had been since they played Vancouver. I think it was close to five years. The band's energy only dropped once when they played 'White Guilt' but it had to be done. During their last song 'History's Stranglers' the singer spent the entire time either right in front of the crowd and barrier or right on top of them. He was a ball of energy that was incredible to watch. It also sounded really good, and they played tight so that helped their cause. I'd go see them again in an instant. Also can't wait for their new album Nov 11th.

It didn't seem like long before Bad Religion graced the stage and the mosh pit exploded. It was huge. They busted out with '21st Century Digital Boy' and went on from there. I'm not the hugest Bad Religion fan so I took to the balcony where it sounded nice and crisp. They went on to play close to two hours, and when it came time for an encore they came out with acoustic guitars, but no one seemed to mind. Instead of heading for the exits the crowd broke out their lighters. Then the band plugged back in and played a few more tunes after the acoustic set and called it a night. Greg Hetson is looking old but still busts out the biggest jumps. Jay Bentley is hilarious but they really couldn't touch The Bronx in the energy department. Greg Graffin does a lot of pointing and Brian Baker got fat. The drummer is good though. Definitely a step up from the last guy.

All in all it was a good show, and I may not call myself a fan of Bad Religion I still stayed to the very end of the gig. - Wed, 17 Sep 2008 1:51pm Edited: Wed, 17 Sep 2008 1:54pm

if i had know The Rebel Spell were opening - it would have tipped the scales in favor of going to this.

I really wanted to see the Bronx - & am now really kicking myself because i have heard great things about this show.

Bad Religion I have seen 9 times so I didn't get very excited and just didn't want to take the 2 days off work for it - I had already taken 3 in a row for summer slaughter & Lagwagon - so those are the breaks.

anyone get any good pictures or vids? - Wed, 17 Sep 2008 5:33pm

I've been waiting to see The Bronx for a long time so it was pretty sweet, but nothing was making me go in that mosh pit.

I've seen Bad Religion a few times myself. This one was by far the longest and maybe even best round. That's only because I can't remember what I thought when I saw them 10 years ago. - Thu, 18 Sep 2008 8:43pm
