This show was an "intimate" engagement limited only to the BVRNSYDE faithful and people who hate real music. First up was Chaos Assassin, and they totally tore the place up. I actually felt like chaos was being assassinated. And their bass player is a mathcore god.

After that was the low point of the evening, Acting Ensign. These three stoners shat out two songs totaling 33 minutes and I swear I only hear 3 different riffs the whole time. The star trek episode was a nice distraction though for those of us who hate Dystopia cover bands.

Last up was Ungoliant, epic middle earth doom that actually pushed my back a few steps as they summoned Balrogs and go "Doo Doo Dee Doo Dee Dooooooo" on the guitar. I eagerly await their show on Friday where I hear they are going to play their special edition set with 45 minutes of extra footage complete with commentary by Viggo Mortensen.

PS: I still hate the Mito. - Wed, 23 Feb 2005 11:44am

"Alpha Quadrant" isn't bad, though I prefer "Shelly Ann" as the moniker myself (conjoinment of Shell Oil and Salvation Army).

=)

Fun show all around. - Wed, 23 Feb 2005 12:14pm

Chaos Assassin ripped my face off.. the rest of victoria is not ready for these brutalitarians. thats why we keep them wrapped in a dirty little box in my basement.

Acting Ensign played a inspired sloppy set.. i think their bass player forgot like half the riffs and just decided to make up riffs where he forgot some... all and all.. was fun.

Ungoliant played pretty well for their first show.. i was happy with the overall sound and despite a few screw ups was a pretty decent set. hope everyone who came enjoyed themselves.

Alpha Quadrant is good.. Shelly Ann.. is ok.. i like Kill House. - Wed, 23 Feb 2005 5:49pm

i missed chaos assassin but arrived in time to see Acting Ensing....um ya..too slow..yawn...then was Ungoliant, and i must admit that i was quite impressed. here were a bunch of people i've watched over the past couple years barely able to play their instruments, shuffle in and out of the burnside burnouts basement from yet another dedicated jam with whomever happened to be in there at that time. but this night, the new version of every one of them was ripping it up in front of me, genre-twisting their way to a great first gig. hopefully margos killer vocals will be louder on friday, great song structure with intensity levels coming and going in just the right places. i give them an honest B+ for their showing. - Wed, 23 Feb 2005 8:14pm

Chaos Assassing sounded much better without a bassist plus they forgot to play two songs. grindcore, pffttt . . .

When did Acting Ensign get good?

Ungoliant ARE black metal. I don't care what you say Scott and Shawn YOU ARE. I have "black metal" cds that are less epic and cold then that. I think you guys include the "doom" in the genre because you guys aren't Nazis and fear being labeled poseurs. I expect corpse paint on Friday.

P.S. Ernest Borg Nine I have SUCH a crush on you now. - Wed, 23 Feb 2005 9:02pm

I'm sure hoping there were some "sloppy poo breaks" happening in there somewhere. Oh wait - sorry - I guess BWD wasn't playing. (cowers in corner as Brad approaches)
So Jaimie when are you blokes gonna do that 24-min. Corrupted cover? Like, you guys are the Grand Guignol of Victoria 'rock-sounds' tripping the light fantastic! Dynamo! (hey - wasn't that just the best little condensed review of yourselves that you have EVER READ?)
Lookng forward to catching Ungoliant and Chaos Assassin next time around - I just hope they'll rip my face off like they did to deep-voiced chucklehead Dan Hartman (former NBC Today Show host). - Thu, 24 Feb 2005 12:31am

That is the best review I've ever seen of our band that didn't have the words "they suck" or "donkey balls" in it. - Thu, 24 Feb 2005 10:58am

Missed the first band, stupid Doomhammer and his computer.

AE, songs so long, death to you all.

Ungoliant, really good minus the fact I couldn;t hear a single vocal, can't wait to see you somewhere where I can hear more. Only caught 3 songs because work comes early, but wicked 3 songs. - Thu, 24 Feb 2005 8:20pm
