Hey,

I'm hard-up for cash right now, and am considering losing my Marshall JTM-45 re-issue & matching 4X12 cab... both are in near mint condition, and the cab has Celestion Green-Backs...

Does anyone know what this is worth?

I'm not going to part with my baby unless it's really worth a whole bunch... I think I gave a kidney for it originally :D

So? What-cha-all-think?

Thanks,

i see a new one of those heads on ebay for 1800. so used, maybe 1250 - 1400, depending on the person. the cab, you're gonna lose on. it's the nature of the beast for marshall(or any) cabs. you might be able to find someone to buy it for 500 bucks, more likely 400. those heads look cool as shit though. - Fri, 16 Jan 2009 7:06pm

You SHOULD get $1000-1200 locally for the head, any less and you might as well Ebay it. If you list the set at $1500 you're making the cab a value added deal - but even still you might have to come down.
Unfortunately serious local buyers are hard to come by, especially on higher end stuff. And they're picky, there's always something to complain about.
Good luck.
(of course, if I was buying it I'd say 800 bux for the set, no more, it's not like it's hand-wired . . . HA) - Sat, 17 Jan 2009 12:36am

Thanks for the feed-back guys... I pretty much figured I'd get about $1200 for the head, but 400 bucks for the cab?! I`m not arguing, but that`s brutal... I think the speakers alone cost me $200 a pop.

I think I'll hang on to the cab... or pull the speakers out and sell it piece by piece: I'd be far better off.

Thanks again ;-) - Sun, 18 Jan 2009 12:33pm

yeah, cabs go down significantly more than heads or combos do. like the other guy said, you're going to have better luck selling those as a unit. - Sun, 18 Jan 2009 2:45pm

I think you're right Laprider... I think they're 25 watt: They're G12Ms... it's a 16 ohm cab, so you tell me.

Thanks again! - Sun, 18 Jan 2009 9:17pm

the Greenbacks rule..

$400 is about right.. I recently traded my near mint Boogie 4x12 (Vintage 30's) straight across for a beat up old Greenbacks cab.. the Boogie cost $1100 plus tax and I couldnt even get $500 for it. - Mon, 19 Jan 2009 11:36am Edited: Mon, 19 Jan 2009 11:36am

Near as I know there are at least 3 types of greenbacks out there (not including the afore mentioned 30W); actual vintage greenbacks, standard new greenbacks (25W), and the heritage re-issue greenbacks (20W) all of these are G12M.
It might be worth your while to check and see if they're the heritage greenbacks. I don't know what retail is on these, but based on my costs they'd be worth about double, which would be a great selling point.
If your 4X cab is "16ohms" then each speaker is as well. The heritage greenbacks are actually 15ohms, so if you pop the back off the cab and see that you hit the jackpot. - Tue, 20 Jan 2009 11:44am

Yeah, there's also a Heritage G12M - confusing eh? I think MF added the "-25' to their part number to mark the difference, because when you look at the back of the speaker it just says G12M.
The G12H is the 30W I think Laprider was talking about.

actually its a good thread....so many people are in search of that elusive "brown" sound from the ol greenback cabs.

The originals are just that, in a class all themselves, we'll see how the new reissues break in though.

Originally all the reissue's were 30 watts, I know there are all the above mentioned and I will say there is a very noticeable difference in the sound characteristics of all of these speakers...The heritage version sounding truest to the original.
I've gone through this with a few backline providers and Celestion has to rework their model ID's....too confusing.

But back to your amp...its sad but true a 4x 12 is basically always a 400 buck cab....used heads are worth what someone will give you for them....why I think they should always be bought slightly used.

Just a comment on the "re-issue" comment...

From everything I've read (and not experienced) re-issues are never better than the real thing, but are comparible once broken in (whatever that means) and they suck if you compare new re-issue to old worn-in goodness.

Anyways... if you have a greenback 4x12 I'll buy it for $400 or work a trade for a 4x12 g12-75's (top or bottom) - Tue, 20 Jan 2009 8:18pm

Thanks again for all the info guys... I finally got to taking the back off, and it is in fact a stock 1960ax model with 4 25w G12Ms:

http://www.musiciansnews.com/guitars/84/marshall_1960ax_classic_reissue_old_style_cab.shtml

As for the $400... I'll keep it in mind, but am thinking I'll just Ebay the whole thing out... with my customized Dr.Z Air Break of course (can't play her ANYWHERE without it!) Anyway, this very head and cab are up on Ebay now: at $1100 & $500... with 3 days to go... So I think that must be the way to go.

I am however looking for a smaller setup... maybe a fender, vox or ampeg? Something vintage with a couple of channels and maybe a spring reverb... Also looking for a good volume pedal... and a Full-Drive II... N-E thoughts?

Thanks Again! - Thu, 22 Jan 2009 8:03pm

i currently have a fender bandmaster reverb head from 68 or 69 i'm looking to get rid of. The guy before me took the guts out of the head and built a custom 1x12 cab for it. i still have the stock chassis in case you want to put it back to stock. - Fri, 23 Jan 2009 11:02am

dayinthelife: I know of a few vintage blackface Fender amps for sale privately that might fit the bill for you if you're looking for something in the 35 - 40 watt range. Prices are around $2k per, don't know how that fits your budget or not. *edit* duh, you're selling your Marshal to raise some cash. Obviously you're not gonna go vintage amp shopping... my bad.

As for speakers, I've been pleased with the G10 Heritage Greenback that Celestion came out with a couple of years ago, although there isn't really a real vintage 10" to compare to. The 12" greens have been disappointing, and before I emptied my wallet on a Heritage Greenback I would order an H75 from Jim at Scumback Speakers instead. Well worth checking out his site: http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/ - Fri, 23 Jan 2009 11:39am Edited: Fri, 23 Jan 2009 11:41am

Those Scumbacks look cool for the price: thanks Andy!

And Crux... tell me more about this amp... what are you asking for it? I of course have to turf the Marshall first, but, price dependant, I a definitely interested.

Also, I am going to be picking up some sort of recording interface for my computer... looking for an inexpensive way to track the band properly... Any real musts to know here? Are any of the USB interfaces really addiquit? Thanks again! - Sat, 24 Jan 2009 12:08am
