i have a bunch of (used but good) matched Mesa Boogie 6L6's .

I'll sell you 4 of them for $50... which is half price

I also have some 5881's which are functionally the same tube. I have 9 power tubes in total 6xmatched mesah 6l6's & 3 sovtek 5881. if you want them all, I'll sell them for $90 for all 9. - Fri, 20 Oct 2006 2:06pm Edited: Fri, 20 Oct 2006 2:10pm

5U4's are rectifiers, and it's doubtful they'd go.
A good local place to buy tubes is Pacific TV in Esquimalt.
Here's his online catalog, but you'll do better if you pay him a visit.

He can also test all you're tubes and let you know what needs replacing. - Fri, 20 Oct 2006 2:32pm

When you say some of the tubes have died - what exactly do you mean? Are they microphonic (they make a sound like BB's in a jar if you tap them lightly with a Sharpie while the amp is running), or do they have internal shorts (blue flashes coming from a tube, amp makes popping and banging sounds), or are the heaters open (tube won't light up - almost never happens)?

Do the problems happen with the tube rectifier (5U4GB) or while using the silicon diodes as well.

Does the amp whistle or howl on high gain settings?

I wouldn't pay money for used tubes - if they were any good, they'd be in an amp, IMHO.

If you pick up a used tube and hold it to your ear and tap lightly with a finger, you can tell a lot about how it will perform. The more loose and "boingy" it sounds, the more likely it is to be microphonic, as any noise from loose internal elements can be picked up and amplified.

Ham radio swap meets are good places to get tubes.

I've had luck finding stuff in the basement of Capital Iron, with all the old radios. - Fri, 20 Oct 2006 4:38pm

I don't agree. while you should be careful about used tubes, they are not necessarily bad. LOTS of people swap tubes to get a different sound, or just to see what other tubes sound like. These ones I have are out of a bass amp & I swapped them out to see if different tubes would sound different.

I have 3 sets of 12ax7's speciafically because of this - 2 of the sets of 4 are BRAND new , in boxes.

You'll rarely find 6l6's , 12ax7's, 5881's, 12au7's, etc at capital iron. and if you do, I would be REALLY suspect about them. not only are they used, but they've most likely been mistreated as well, and you have no idea what they were in, how they were treated, etc. This sort of contracdicts what you said earlier.

anyways, my tubes are good, they are not microphonic, and if you don't like them, I'll take em back.

..and they are all matched. try to find matched tubes at capital iron ( or even L&M for that matter!). - Fri, 20 Oct 2006 8:11pm

Sort of, if you strictly stick to the types you mention above. These are NOS American made EL-84's (Vox AC-15, AC-30 anyone?), and I paid less for them there than for a pair of your "used but good" tubes.

Of course that was a year or three back, and I have heard they have gotten rid of a lot of the stuff in the basement there.

But as I said "I have had LUCK..." as opposed to "They have all the tube types there fully stocked at rock bottom prices."

I think you'll agree I got lucky - my statememt stands.

By the way, there are many good explanations out there for why tube matching is more of a marketing gimmick than a requirement (well, it's a requirement NOW, because so many new tubes are crud)

Used and tested 6L6's are $5 each at Pac. TV.
If they're NOS that's a hell of a lot better than whatever Mesa has repackaged.
IMO. - Sat, 21 Oct 2006 9:50pm

GF - If your amp is new enough to still be under warranty, you either play it 24/7 or there's something likely wrong. mactac's right, I've had anything from a loose wiper, to a flakey switch, or even a bad solder joint give the kind of symptoms you indicate. While your amp is on try tapping the knobs, jacks, and around the switches to check for a bad contact. If you hear the sound change (ie. get louder, softer or crappier), take it in for that there 'warrantee'.
Otherwise, the best strategy is to have 'em tested. Pop the tubes out, make notes of which sockets they each came out of. Get your ass down to Pacific T.V. and have him test them. If it turns out they're bad, do him the courtesy of buying new ones there, because you might need him again someday. And if you do get new tubes, pay attention to how long they last. You might have something else going on.
Good luck. - Sun, 22 Oct 2006 11:35pm
