I'm curious as to whether there are any '80s digital synths sitting out waiting for a better home. I'm thinking of starting a band with a strong '80s sound, and I have no interest in getting in on the old-school analog synth or new-school digital emulator of old-school analog synth bandwagon. I want the real shit.

I'm interested in mid- to high-quality synths. I'm open to different styles (FM, wavetable, sampling) with different features (full-on workstation with 1000 part sequencer and 1500 part multitimbrality, to simple press-button-and-hear-sound). Polyphony is absolutely essential, preferably 12 or more voice, although I might be happy with as little as 6. I want one with a keyboard, but if you offer me a sweet deal on a module, let's talk.

To give an idea of what I'm looking for, I'm interested in a Yahama DX-7, Korg M1 or Wavestation, Ensoniq ESQ-1, Elka EK-22, Kawai K-anything, Roland D-50 or D-10, you get the idea. Something that's been sitting in the closet for ten years cause it sounds cheesy. In the bad way. I want to capture that cheese and squeeze out the sweet sweet cheese juice.

If you have something, let me know. We'll talk. - Thu, 4 May 2006 5:12pm

Yo, thanks User. I didn't know about usedvictoria.

Russell, frankly I'm not interested, but good luck. I'm not much of a player (yet) and I'm into the pop side, rather than metal. - Fri, 5 May 2006 2:49pm

Old rolands are wicked for that 80's cheeze sound... I reccomend the Juno series (duh) and the JX-3P's are damn good, and can go for as low as $50 (but with the programmer they tend to go for around $400) - Sat, 6 May 2006 7:13pm

Junos are hot, but I desperately want to avoid the 80s-band-with-analog-synth thing. I'm dead fucking set on digital. Right now the D-550 on usedvictoria is the prime candidate (my roommate used to have a D-50, but a bought of unemployment ended that), and I could get a decent MIDI keyboard from L&M............ - Sun, 7 May 2006 1:03am

Hi Knife...I know EXACTLY what you mean about digital VS analog...I'd be frightened to use the older analog synths on the road anymore! Just as a tip, the JV 880 that's on the same page on UsedVictoria would be a better choice for you...the D550 is a God, but does tend to be a one-trick pony as far as multi-timbre etc goes, whereas the 880 has pretty much ALL the 80's and 90's sounds plus 6 ( I think) parts AND a full-on drum sound section ( no sequencer). I use a U20 in NUVOWAVO and it covers almost everything, the JV 880 is the 3rd generation and greatly improved version of that tech. You should buy the 550 anyways tho..those things are totally great for what they are..I'd have bought it in a second if I didn't already have a Varios version. Cheers! Vegas! - Mon, 8 May 2006 5:41pm

If my Tax refund comes in soon, I'll buy both. The JV 880 is really appealing for its versatility (and ability to serve as a drum machine), but the D550 is the real deal. I totally appreciate the value of having a workhorse general synth, but at this point I'd be probably more happy with something really straightforward and really legit. I tend to suffer paralysis with too many options. - Mon, 8 May 2006 6:07pm

Hey ghost of thyne knife......My two cents...go with the the JV..Dan Tate and I made some of the most beautiful music in the world on one that was left in my jamspot for a couple of days.Shit I'm tempted to take the money and by that fucker for me and my kid. one of the most truly versatile instruments for creating usuable tones - Thu, 11 May 2006 8:34pm Edited: Thu, 11 May 2006 8:34pm

There's a Super JV-1080 up there now! If I wasn't anticipating impending financial suicide (ie: project mix i/o in the mail) I'd snatch that baby up for myself!

Yeah, I've been eye-balling that....... I still really like the looks of that D-550. We'll see what's still available when my tax refund gets in. - Fri, 12 May 2006 10:10am

The 1080 has three sample boards in it! It wasn't too terribly long ago I paid $400 for just one of those.

Its still got 1 space for my Keyboards of the 60's and 70s - Fri, 12 May 2006 10:36am

Fuck you guys, you'll talk me into this thing yet. I _do_ get paid on Monday........ And MIDI keyboards are good and cheap.

Shit. This could happen.

and hey, I'll start a synth thread over in music chat or something. I need someone to impart their wisdom to me, synth-wise. I am as yet a young grasshopper. - Fri, 12 May 2006 11:11pm
