Well, when Extreme cancelled punk rock I expected it, but this was a shocker.
After 8+ years as a member of CFUV, they have decided to take away my Area Of Refuge timeslot(I've held for over seven years) and have been "suspended indefinitely".
Why? Well, they told me that the reason is because Chuck Andrews, my co-host of the last two years, was not "an approved, trained member of the radio club". That should read: He didn't pay the yearly fee. As for training, Chuck learned everything that I had in my long tenure. He is a great radio host and never said or did anything wrong while On-Air. I was never "officially trained" by CFUV. The guy I co-hosted for trained me and we left it at that. He happened to be the Program Director at the time, so I figured that was the way we do it. I don't see the problem. What it amounts to is losing my show to an oversight on my part. A phone call and a couple of questions could have solved this, but they got the chance they've been waiting for.
There's more to ramble on about, but I'll leave it at this.

If you listen to punk, you should know that there is very little left on CFUV.
if you want to let them know how you feel about this, you can email:

I've defended CFUV many times over the years against the attacks of the local music community. I guess I was wrong. They only do care about their own little group. - Tue, 28 Jan 2003 11:25pm
Areo the CFUV organization is totally a bunch of overly-politically-correct, anal, idiots. i can't believe the attitudes that some people there have--- its pathetic radio that no one listens to. sure its fun to have a show, but like little details really fucking matter. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 12:21am

I sent an email to both addresses. I don't know the ins and outs of CFUV, and I didn't listen to the Area of Refuge all too often (forgot the time), but this pisses me off nonetheless. It really sucks when what is called "independent," meaning (to me) more open-minded and less judgemental, boils down to a close-minded social club. It may not be that simple, but that's how I see it.

Even if punk rock "sucks," alot of people, however misguided in your (the anonymous poster's) eyes, like it in this town. So does that give someone the right to put personal preference above someone else's taste and their ability to share it? I dunna think so. You may, seeing as you seem to be divinely endowed with musical wisdom above our petty mortal conceptions. But that's just me venting to what might be a five year old girl who likes Britney Spears. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 1:13am

Thats bullshit. I'll be sure to give em a peice of my mind. I remember listening to your show back when I was like 14 (almost 20 now). The first request you guys played for me was a McRackins tune ahh the memories Isn't CFUV "listener suported" if they keep ditching all the good shows and moving around time slots they sure as hell won't have much suport come donation time. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 1:21am
Carl too late that is piece of garbage if i have ever heard one, i didnt listen to the show, and im not even the hugest fan of punk, although i do like it, but i like the idea that there was something out their other than the mainstream bullshit, and the fact that they screw you on a technicality is riddiculus.... - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 2:21am

The worst part is realizing that there was still kids tuning in to the show.
At the all-ager on Saturday, a girl asked me when my next show was. Thinking she meant the band, I said I didn't know if we had anything booked. She said "No, Area Of Refuge. When is your next radio show?"

Fucking depressing. - Wed, 29 Jan 2003 9:31am

Here's the response I got from Randy... I don't know if he'd be too pleased that I've posted this... but then again, I don't really care. Posting this might just be flogging a dead horse, but I thought some of it is kinda funny (the whole law-suit thing for instance).
Here it is:

I appreciate your expression of concern regarding the representation of local punk on-air. I'm aware of the importance of Area of Refuge has played in that community.

Area of Refuge was not removed from on-air because of personal or musical differences. The decision was a collective decision of all three full-time staff at the station and was made in consulatation and agreement with the Programming Committee (which is composed of Tyler's fellow volunteers). I don't know Chuck Andrews personally, and his personal character isn't in question. The content of the program was not the issue.

While I'm unable to discuss the full reasons for Tyler's removal due to legal questions of privacy (if I told you all the reasons the station could be sued by Tyler). What this means in practice is that Tyler is free to slag the station to his heart's content but we cannot respond with the full reasons for our decision in a public manner. I will tell you that the reason you have given in your email is not the sole reason that Tyler was suspended. He was removed for legal issues that put the station in serious contravention of CRTC (The Canadian Radio and Television Commison) regulations. This government body regulates our radio station and it is the staff's job to make sure that programmers follow these regulations. There is also long history of problems with Tyler's conduct at the station. You should realize that whatever you may hear from Tyler is not the full story.

I am in full support of punk rock programming at the station. I have put several punk rock programs on-air during my tenure as program director and I am fan of the music myself. At the same time, the community support for the program cannot influence the station's decision. Several other programmers have been removed from on-air for the exact same reason that Tyler was removed: I cannot treat him differently than other volunteers.

Thank You
Randy Gelling

A long history of problems with my conduct?
The main issue that he is referring to happened in 2000. The week of my wedding a bunch of friends were in town and I invited them to the station while I did my show. They were drinking beer in the hallway outside the on-air booth. A member of the staff was working that night and she told them that there was no drinking allowed, so they went outside. End of story. Except that when station manager at the time Dean called me, he said that she told him that she was threatened and they were calling for me to be suspended. I feel that since Dean was (uncerimoniously) removed, the current staff of the station has had it out for me.
As for the big issue with the CRTC, it boils down to this; Chuck signed my name to the log sheet. Lamentable, but hardly a reason to terminate a show over(this includes the "other people" who were suspended along with me). I had no idea that would be such a serious offence. Communication could have solved any problems like that.

Thanks to everyone who emailed their concerns to the station. It makes me feel good that I was doing a serivce to some of you out there. - Fri, 31 Jan 2003 7:19pm
