Heya.

I need to hang with a solid punk drummer for about half an hour to get some tips on playing super fast 8ths with my right hand. I've never been one for playing fast and now it's come up that I'm going to have to learn how to do it properly.

I've been playing 17 years and feel confident about my ability.

I am looking for someone who plays fast, but is still solid and IN TIME to give me some instruction on speeding up my hands. Like I said, I don't need much of your time, just a little help.

If this sounds like you, please drop me an email at [email protected]

I've got a space to do this in, if needed and would be willing to pay for your time if you know your shit.

Thanks!

If you've been playing for 17 years, and still haven't figured it out...better leave the gig to someone who can play. - Wed, 5 May 2004 8:51am

Stan, obviously you dont play any frikkin instrument, and if by any act of god you actually do, i guarantee you suck azz. Although your comment made me laugh pretty hard (kudos on a good burn)......I have been playing guitar even longer, yet I cant shred like Vai, so should i give up and let someone else in who can do the job? ..or do i keep trying and learn? I will go with the latter. - Wed, 5 May 2004 9:37am

You probably should. Good luck getting any gig that requires Vai chops. It's not going to happen, and you know that better than anyone. Same thing for jap. - Wed, 5 May 2004 10:54am

Stan... did you fart? 'Cause I swear I smell asshole. Seriously, FU&LD buddy.

Adam: I'm just looking for someone who knows the physical technique for playing fast 8th's, or has some suggestions for exercises to build up speed. I can't seem to relax my hands and still get the speed I'm looking for.

I figured since there's a decent punk scene on here, there might be someone who could help me out. If not, I'll just keep at it and hope for the best.

Add personal hygiene to your list of concerns...I get the sense you are not a decent punk drummer in the making, and at your age, a half hour lesson will probably do 'fuck all'. - Wed, 5 May 2004 12:12pm

Stan are you the man? Who remembers that show from the 80's. SWITCHBACK it was called. I believe it was from Halifax. The host was Stan the Man, and he had a puppet dog Roofus. They played minute clips of Batman (old) in between his shinanigans. - Wed, 5 May 2004 12:55pm

the secret to playing fast is use lots of pinky, hardly any wrists.

Actually, you should be able to play just as fast using just your fingers with your arms and wrists completely still.

I know that when I get tense I start to play with my wrists and squeeze the sticks really hard.

I've been playing drums since 1985 and I still haven't gotten anywhere close to where I can be.

try playing parididles and doublestroke rolls to build up your speed. - Mon, 10 May 2004 2:18pm

Ryan, thanks man... I'll probably give you a call.

it would appear I didn't give myself enough credit, 'cause tonight we played this new song quite a few times and I found I didn't really have any problems keeping up. I guess I was just having an off night the first time we played it. :)

Thanks for the positive reinforcement people, this site often lacks in that department.

The best approach I've found for building up speed is to practice using 2 different approaches:

Slow and controlled
- get a metronome period.
- work at tempos you are 100% tension free with
- focus on smooth fluid technique
- focus on controlling the entire stroke/technique
- experiement using more of one thing over a nother (from hip to shoulder to elbow to wrist to each individual finger), find what works and is most comfortable for the different techniques/grips you use
- maintain consistent stick control (volume and stick height)
- increase your speed slowly (with the 'nome), stop or slow down as soon as you feel any tension, really focus on keeping all of your muscles relaxed. The technique should do the work for you.
- experiment with different grips/sticks drum height, throne position etc until you find what is perfectly comfortable for you

Play as fast as you can
- after you've practiced and warmed up being controlled and relaxed, practice playing as fast as you can without caring about your control or technique. The point here is you want to teach your muscles where you want them to be speed wise.
- find a speed that you can at least keep up for a bit, then practice slowing it down into your controlled and fluid speed range.
- you will use differenet technique for super fast stuff than you do for slow and controlled stuff, the hardest part is getting the two techniques to meet in the middle without loosing control.

Last, practice as much as you can. Once you have a solid focused approach to achieving your goals, work as hard as you can to make them. Nothing replaces hours of long hard practice. - Tue, 11 May 2004 4:51am

BBJones: very nicely mapped out and very appreciated. That's pretty much the approach I was going to take, thanks for confirming my suspicions.

I first saw you play with Fan Tan Alley and then with your new band (both names) and I was very impressed with your drumming. You are what I would describe as a melodic drummer in that you are rocking but at the same time you comliment the melody by adding emphasis with cymbals etc. Great ears are hard to find in a drummer. A player who understands their strengths and limitations and is constantly attempting to improve their craft and art has my vote any day - even if it means enduring the comments of the petty and disapppointed. O boy - I guess it's now my turn for the slagging - go for it boys! - Wed, 12 May 2004 4:04am
