I listen to all kinds of music including, punk, ska, rock, rap, metal, folk, and a buch of other styles as well. One thing that struck me as odd, was that everysingle rapper i've ever talked to thinks that he/she is going all the way to the top of the charts. Whenever I've talked to any other bands within any of those other styles listed above, they've never been as naive as rappers in thinking that they have what it takes to make it big.

why is this?

is this beceause of the media? Is it beceause of the fact that any rapper portrayed by the media albeit in T.V or in film, is the rapper that fits into the gangster mentality, the 'number one' american philosophy, or the make or break logic. Why is it that rappers cannot simply enjoy what they're doing and have to look at music in such an arrogant way.

I love rap music, and will continue to listen to it and it's underground, alternative scene, but this point bugs me.

I just though I'd share that with all of you. I know that hardly anyone that I've encoutered on these forums are into that kind of music, I'm just trying to share this experience that I've had.

i think it's because theyre overly pretenious. they want to make it so bad that they get caught up in a delusion. can't blame them though, there are some real talented cats out there. - Fri, 19 Dec 2003 10:22pm

I think you are generalizing. Don't you think that most genres of music are like that as well? Take Pop and mainstream alternative, situation looks similair. But we all know that if you dig deeper into it you'd find a different people and different perspectives.
So ya...I don't know. - Sat, 20 Dec 2003 11:48am

You're making a totally rash generalization. Not all rappers are "gangsta". Look at people like Michael Franti or on a more local level, Kia Kadiri. There's a ton of hip-hop artists out there who are making music because they love it, not to have a no. 1 single. - Sat, 20 Dec 2003 12:23pm

I'm not talking about all rappers, just the ones that I've had contact with.

Don't get me wrong and think that i meant that all of rap was 'gangster rap'. I listen to all sorts of rap music, and yes, some of is the mainstream thug rap, but I also listen to other rap as well.

I agree with what's being said, but I think that that arrogance isn't just limited to the rap scene. I'm come in contact with singers from other genres of music and some that I've met have had that arrogance about them that they actually believe that they've got what it takes to become a world-wide phenomenon, makes tons of money, marry a fellow rich celeb and everything's hunky dory. That's not how the world works!
With the rap scene, I think rappers should rap about something other than shoes (nelly) or constantly rapping about how they're gonna kill their wife and rape their mother (eminem). Personally, the underground stuff's the stuff I respect and give recognition to because they actually take that genre of music and make it something better than what anything commercial has had to offer in a long time! - Sat, 20 Dec 2003 10:47pm

I've dealt with more attitude from local acts than any of the "big" names... and that's the rock, jazz and classical scenes, not rap. - Sat, 20 Dec 2003 10:59pm
