As far as I know, due to the divorce, SoS studios is no more. That sucks too, cause I wanted to talk to Scott regarding getting a copy of Mission of Christ - Silence in Grave (Yello Tape) from the master reels. - Wed, 20 Sep 2006 10:41pm

I spoke to Scott about a month ago. Ya the divorce pretty much ended his reign in Langford. He told me he is setting up shop in Sooke! Chances are you can find him @ Logan's if you need to. One of the best engineers i have ever known. Great guy too. Hope he gets back on his feet soon. - Thu, 28 Sep 2006 10:07am

In Sooke?!? Where about's is Scott moving, perhaps I have an excuse to go out to Sooke again (other then to visit my Father's Grave right past the high :) school on the way to Victoria). And can he get his clothes washed if he does move out there?!? Yeah, usually when I head over to Logan's he's never there. - Thu, 28 Sep 2006 10:22am Edited: Thu, 28 Sep 2006 10:23am

Details of the studio will be revealed to the appropriate people in the fullness of time.

I know I'm asking a lot in this town, but most visitors will be limited to those of the paying variety. Seen? - Fri, 29 Sep 2006 6:07pm Edited: Fri, 29 Sep 2006 7:24pm

Thanks lonemonk. I guess we can reveal that the monk and I have decided to throw our collective lots in together and form a new super studio at his place in quaint Sooke, tentatively named the Lap of Luxury. It will be about twice the size of the old S.O.S. in both control and performance rooms and will, of course, have the same team of lunatics turning the knobs. It WILL be a little less loosey goosey than the S.O.S. but that just means there will be a somewhat higher level of professionalism. I'm hoping to have it available for outside recordings sometime around rememberance day but first I have to a) liberate the remainder of the S.O.S. gear from the old place where it has been held hostage by a crazy person even though there are about 9 people who still have gear locked up in there after 7 months (!!) b) ensure that the room is finished to both the monk's and my stringent standards of acousical quality and c)do a couple of tester recordings on my own dime to ensure that there are no weird gremlins or acoustical curves lurking in the corners and (most importantly) d) not cramp the style of the good monk and his family unit upon whose goodwill the enterprise will ultimately depend (for the dimwitted amongst you, that means far fewer of the 20 day sessions that yield $375 worth of beer empties, if you catch my drift). Many of you will rejoice in that there will still be a resident studio dog (alas not Imru who passed away some time ago) and many flags and hockey jerseys festooning the premises, not to mention many thousands of LP's and CD's for "ambiance". Once open to the public we will be endeavoring to keep the old rates in place at least until we have figured out whether or not it's going to fly financially and will be restricting access to serious enquiries only (no more of this "I have an hour of songs to record; can I book an hour of studio time?" crapola). And thanks to Comrade Ramage it will almost certainly be a lot neater and tidier than the old cesspool that was the S.O.S. In short it will have all the positives of the old Sea of Shit and fewer of the negatives. At any rate we will (collectively) keep you posted. - Tue, 3 Oct 2006 10:32pm Edited: Tue, 3 Oct 2006 10:39pm

Wow, it must be kismet. I just came on hear to make a thread asking where Mr. Sea of Shit's new studio project was.

Scott, if you read this, it's Mitch from the band SaniJav. We recorded 5 songs with you about 10 months ago or so, and were extremely happy with results. Anyways, after a not so pleasant recording experience with Mr.Brainless, we'd like to come visit you again to record some more. Shoot us an email if you like at sanijav *at* gmail. - Wed, 4 Oct 2006 8:06pm

I don't really wanna run a smear campaign here on livevic against Gary, because he was really nice to us when we recorded with him, but.......the guy "lost" all of our recordings and never offered any sort of compensation for our wasted money and time. - Thu, 5 Oct 2006 6:15am

Thank you sweet jesus I was worried with everything going on with s.o.s. that we werent going to get to see Scott doing anymore recording. This city cant afford to lose people that important to our music community. Bravo gentlemen I wish you only the best of course. Oh and I call dibs on any old Neo's stuff left at s.o.s. - Thu, 5 Oct 2006 7:08am

That's so wierd, he's probably misplaced the recordings in CuBase. Do you remember what he saved the recordings as?!? Hey Jay, do you have any Neos stuff?!? Cause somehow I found the re-issued recordings (though there in 160 kbps, 44.1 kHz MP3). I call dibs on the Mission of Christ - Silence in Grave (Yello Tape) master reels, damnit!!! :) - Thu, 5 Oct 2006 6:12pm Edited: Thu, 5 Oct 2006 6:17pm

I have none of the Neos stuf anymore, if anyone does and feels like burning some for me I would love you forever. Another one I lost is the old Slow album with, Have Not Been The Same, on it. If anyone has that one as well once again I would love you long time........ - Mon, 9 Oct 2006 8:27am

OK, I shall burn ya the Neos I have and get that to you whenever it's convenient. That Slow EP started a conversation on Punk History Canada's website, but I'll try to hunt that down as well for ya, crossing fingers.

And speaking of Slow: Vancouver's semi-legendary five-piece band Slow got their start in the early 1980's named Sifu. They changed their name to Slow and got signed to the west coast's independent label Zulu Records. In 1985 they released their first piece of product, a 12" single called "I Broke The Circle", and they gained almost immediate local stardom. Such was the interest generated that in 1986 they released a six-song EP, called Against The Glass, which garnered a strong positive response from fans and critics alike across the country.

The band became known best for their outrageous stage show, and they would play anywhere for anyone. At their gig on the opening night of the Festival of Independent Recording Artists, Expo 86's tribute to Vancouver's thriving independent music scene, Slow managed to stop the Festival almost before it began. The details aren't too clear but basically what seems to have happened is that while performing, people who weren't part of Slow's normal audience wandered into the pavillion in which they were playing, were terribly shocked by what they witnessed the band doing, and rushed out to complain to Expo officials. Shortly thereafter, the power was literally turned off on the band, ending their set at 45 minutes. Bassist Stephen Hamm was not impressed, and apparently pulled his pants down to moon the audience; lead singer Tom Anselmi quickly followed suit, also choosing to expose other parts of his anatomy. When the band left the stage they were met by Vancouver Police who considered charging them with indecent exposure. Meanwhile, Expo officials cancelled the rest of the night's performance (and eventually the rest of the festival, "for reasons of safety and security"), which angered those purposely in attendance, and there ensued angry protests from said fans - a group got onstage and were almost impossible to remove, another group got into a fist fight, another group went to the Expo office to use every complaint pad they could find to lodge their complaints, and yet another group descended on the BCTV on-site office where they chanted so loudly that BCTV had to cut their 11:00 o'clock news broadcast short and go to their movie of the night.

Shortly after this debacle, the band split literally in two - Anselmi and guitarist Christian Thorbaldson left to form (c) (aka Copyright), and bassist Stephen Hamm and drummer Terry Russell went on to form Tankhog. - Mon, 9 Oct 2006 2:51pm Edited: Mon, 9 Oct 2006 3:29pm

I wasn't there, but I remember a whole lot of pissed off musicians around town.. mostly in that Network crowd.. cuz none of the other locals got to play after that. I remember thinking that was kinda selfish given that an event so awesome was now part of our history!
Expo made me gag and Have Not been the Same may be my favorite local song.. I still crank it LOUD to this day. - Mon, 9 Oct 2006 5:58pm

I also found out where Scott is living. Strange, cause I used to know the family that lived at the bottom of that hill in that house (that used to be Johnny Zee's mother and father, though I'm not sure if there still around, hope they are). I used to play in the forest surrounding that place, as well as go to big ragers around there. Too much has changed in Sooke from when I grew up in that town (wow, you guys got the A&W, wish we had an A&W in Sooke when I grew up there :( :). - Sun, 12 Nov 2006 1:39am

Construction on location and audio equipment movements are still heavily underway; The weather has also not recently been cooperative...

I can't forsee any recording taking place before the New Year (and possibly extending into the new year at that), but anyone seriously considering contacting the new Studio, please email: [email protected] and describe your recording needs in detail.

There is a rather large list already, and some scheduling is already confirmed.

You are always welcome to email myself as well: [email protected]

When all the setup work is over, and things are flowing nicely, the Resource records in Livevictoria will also be updated with new information, and contact details will be clarified.
