I haven't seen a message asking a general question in a long time, so I was thinking about this the other day. In your opinion, what was that one punk album which really started the whole punk thing/really influenced you to be a punker (watch out for those rockers!!!)? For example, some people like The Ramones first album, and some like Sex Pistols-Nevermind the Bullocks. But I think the one album people overlook is "Forgotten Rebels-This Ain't Hollywood", now out of print. There's not a bad song on the album, even the 2 covers they perform rock. That album is still fresh, and it's too bad more people don't make mention of it.

Honerable mention: House of Commons - Patriot 12" (I'd love to find that some day, that's just a good album) and of course, "Dayglo Abortions - Feed U.S.A. Fetus". Comments? - Mon, 22 May 2006 11:12pm Edited: Mon, 22 May 2006 11:14pm

Phil, it's pretty silly to say that those records are overlooked. By whom? Especially in the case of "Feed Us A Fetus". That record is well known and loved all over the world. One of the best known Canadian punk records I'd wager. The Rebels one may not be as well known, but it's up there. - Mon, 22 May 2006 11:38pm

In my oppinion the best/the punk band that started it all would have to be Crass, but the "Best punk album which was never noticed by anyone..." would probably have to be Rudimentary Peni - Death Church - Tue, 23 May 2006 7:54am Edited: Tue, 23 May 2006 7:54am

You know Ty, that's a good question. But why is it that everyone never makes mentions Forgotten Rebels - This Ain't Hollywood, especially since it's such a good album?!? See, I've read good reviews about Rudimentary Peni tho' (Death Church is such a heavy album). But what's your opinion of albums such as House of Commons-Patriot 12"?!? - Tue, 23 May 2006 10:34am Edited: Tue, 23 May 2006 10:35am

OK, so far there is nothing on this thread that is really that overlooked. All of this stuff is well-regarded by a cult following, and reunion shows of many of these bands have played to big turn-outs. Just because an act never made it to the mainstream consciousness like the Clash or Ramones doesn't make it over-looked. - Tue, 23 May 2006 10:51am

Oops, another album I fergot to mention: D.O.A. - Hardcore '81 (first punk album I bought at Lyle's Place (when they were located where the DJ store is underneath where Lyle's Place currently is)), cause I thought it was cool they printed swear words on the back cover (and I still say it's a classic).

Oops, I also must correct an error in my last message, I meant everyone never makes mention about Forgotten Rebels - This Ain't Hollywood. I hate the option of not being able to edit any message you posted, and it's still silly you can't delete messages. - Tue, 23 May 2006 11:35am

O.K. now I think pretty much every single album mentioned here has been available in stores all over the world, I hardly think that qualifies as not being noticed by anyone. I mean really, D.O.A., Forgotten Rebels, Dayglos, you find me somewhere in the world that has punk rockers that people dont own their albums. H.O.C. broke up too soon to get that kind of recognition by the masses... if they just had of put in another ten years or so...but the punks definitely know who they are, so once again hard to say unnoticed. Hell, Hardcore 81 was the album that made D.O.A. world famous, I mean really that's the album that coined the term hardcore in association with punk rock. That album and a touring schedule that would have killed almost any other band. There are a milion albums out there that should have gotten recognition that didnt, but none of those bands should be on that list. - Tue, 23 May 2006 5:07pm

Hmmm... how to explain this. I really figured that it was just a classic album that the media/zines never speak of the album like they would say the first Ramones album, and I just wondered why noone talks about it, cause "This Ain't Hollywood" still rocks over 20 years later. - Tue, 23 May 2006 7:29pm Edited: Tue, 23 May 2006 7:30pm

These days...almost everything is common knowledge. There's some dude in his basement in Talahassee downloading the first Forgotten Rebels Lp, or the Arson single...and The Pointed Sticks are the top band on every 18 year old power-poppers Myspace page. That being said...as far as Canadian punk goes, bands like DOA, The Dayglo Abortions, Teenage Head, Viletones, Diodes, Pointed Sticks, Subhumans, etc...are our "Top 40" punk bands.

I don't think there is an underated punk album on the planet right now...most punk albums (and singles) got blown waaay outa proportion by the KBD / Bloodstains / Smash The State craze, and ebay...and now everything is hyped to shit.

The Angry Samoans made we wanna be a punk...as for albums that influenced me early on...well, punk-rock has always been a singles game for me...but here's a couple punk albums I really like. I wouldn't say any of 'em are underated though...and some of 'em are pretty recent...

The Suicide Commandos - "Make a Record"
The Gears - "Rockin' At Ground Zero"
SNFU - "And no one else wanted to Play"
A-Sexuals - "Be What You want"
Consumers - "All My Friends Are Dead"
The Kids - "S/T"
The Boys - "S/T"
The Cramps - "Psychedelic Jungle"
Angry Samoans - "Back From Samoa"
The Pack - "S/T"
Teenage Head - "S/T"
Lewd - "American Wino"
Rezillos - "Can't Stand the..."

Do The Smalls count.
Although they were noticed by a lot of people, just not mainstream. Maybe not so much punk as rock?
I dunno, I do miss their yearly visits. - Sun, 28 May 2006 2:37pm

I just think the songs are better... most of which re-recorded for the "Surfin' On Heroin" album, which I also prefer over "This Ain't Hollywood". Don't get me wrong... This Ain't Hollywood is a good album for sure I just don't think that it's their best work by a long shot. - Tue, 30 May 2006 12:30am
