Now Billy, Billy doncha lose my number!!! Yes, I liked the Avatar too Elvis, I even replaced it with my Cobain image, Mmmmm... Breasteses and bruises!!!!!!! I dunno about this Usual Suspects cover band, and I wonder why they can't write their own music. I thought bands were into doing covers in the 60s around Victoria. - Fri, 24 Feb 2006 12:47am

why is it that people assume that guys that play in a cover band don't have originals??? what an idiodic assumption! in a town like vic where all you hear from original bands is the same ole tired emo, punk or metal...maybe there's no venues for their type of music. and this opinionated asswipe der probably doesn't play anything except himself.

griphin, i've seen you post before and am surprised by that comment. you always seemed like a pretty open minded person. so lets not assume that this band doesn't have originals. i know people in cover bands and they do it for the money and the fun of it. aint gonna make much money playing origs in this town.

i don't post on here very often anymore because of slaggers like der. it gets tired so wise up people and enjoy life. - Fri, 24 Feb 2006 10:45am

Yes folks there are musicians out there past the age of 17 who like to play in front of people and get a little cash to boot. Just wait a few years kiddies. - Fri, 24 Feb 2006 2:57pm

Actually, they dont have any originals, and according to my friend who started the band,....

"Its all about having a good time, and making a few bucks to boot."

The Usual Suspects is kinda like a reformation of a band i was in with the front-man back in 2001. During that time, we were making about 800$ a month EACH. Not one original tune.

I have been in shitty bands, good bands, professional label bands, i have toured....been there done that. One thing i can say,,,,,the most money i ever made at music was when i worked with the frontman of Usual Suspects. And i guarantee, he isn't some goof off who thinks he knows music. He knows music. Let me give you little kiddies a hint. Last year, i worked with a band on 604 records. I made more money in one week with Mark then what i did in the 6 months of 604. Its all about the music is it? Fuck that, these guys rule. And i know you think they are a great fuckin band, cause none of you said they sucked. You just said what songs they played. SO....

1. You watched it.
2. Thats what they wanted.

So laugh all ya want. Mark's musical resume blows the shit out of any of yours, his vocals blows the shit out of any of yours, his bass player kicks the fuckin ass out of many, and the guitarist is EASILY one of, if not, the best guitarists in Vic. The drummer,,,,I dont know him.

As Conga said..."Just wait a few years kiddies."

You fuckin idiots. - Fri, 24 Feb 2006 3:04pm

Um, yes. I did see the band. i they do suck. Very, very badly.

I think what you're saying, Pierce, is that "it's hip to be square."

Believe me, it's not.

wacka-wacka-wacka........ahhhh!

p.s. I made a bee-line out of there in 20 seconds. So yeah, I guess I did watch (wacka-wacka.) - Fri, 24 Feb 2006 3:59pm

My understanding was that the band did covers cause people liked hearing them, perhaps they should of mentioned they do originals (or, perhaps I missed that, possible). If the band does covers, they should of played an original song. Promotion is a BIG DEAL. Of course you do something to make money, that's why your in a band in the first placem right? Oh BTW: I'm still as open minded as I always have been, just a little more bitter about things now. ;)

They dont have originals! They arent promoting an original act. That 70's Band was on the same program. Many local cover bands have been on that show. I bet none of you have! - Fri, 24 Feb 2006 5:58pm

We`ve been on Lenham, (NUVO WAVO) dressed in our DEVO suits doing Whip It! We`re a cover band, and guess what? This is the funnest band i`ve played in. Best guys to play with as far as personality and talent, we love playing the stuff we play, get paid rather well and chicks dig it. Like you Pierce we`ve all been there done that, everyones done the original, tour the country schtick, some of our guys have had videos on Much Music. Blah Blah.. now we`re in our 40`s with kids and mortgages, and couldn`t care less about originals except for Dooker, right Duke? - Fri, 24 Feb 2006 7:21pm

Although I've never seen Nuvo Wavo, I actually like that band because they dress like the bands they cover. They've got a hook, I guess. - Sat, 25 Feb 2006 12:00am

hey der-fuss. you know a few things enter the mind when you post. 1-your either someone who knows this band and is jelous (maybe someone who tried out and couldnt cut it) and 2-definately a spectator and not a performer. you prolly work in a music store because you never had the talent or balls to get up on stage and do what most of the guys on this thread do so often. der go take a leap off the nearest bridge and make everyones day. or if you have nothing good to say then dont say anything. it must be sad being you.

i really like what Vee and peirce had to say simple and to the point. definatley going to check out the usual suspects after seeing them on tv. they sounded amazing. there are many kinds of hooks for bands and the band sounded just like phil colins on tv i guess thats their hook. we should all try to support local talent original or not. - Sat, 25 Feb 2006 7:41am

Hey, thanks all you guys for the support. This der cat is just your run of the mill slagger. I don't know of anyone that tried out for the band that would want to slag us?

Dr>Vee and nuvo wavo, fun band worth checking out.

Pierce used to be in the band but moved onto bigger and better things. Thanks for the kind words Mikey!

As for originals...Several people in the band write and have written for many years. I have a recording studio that is used fairly often, as does the guitarist. I also personally colaborate with an old band mate in Montreal as well as do some writting with our guitar player. So there are many originals collectively. However, we wanted to do this for the fun of it and to make a little extra cash. We have no expectations of Stardom. We all have jobs and half of the band (like nuvo wavo) is married with kids.

Chesty...We'd love to have you out to see the band. Thanks for being an "anti-der" type poster. This site needs more of that.

And you hit the nail on the head, we don't dress up like nuvo or that 70's band (both great bands) our thing is to try and sound as close to the original artist as posible but also adding our own little things to liven it up. Some of the material is challenging vocally (Journey, TOTO, Loverboy, Collins) and we have 4 great singers in the band. I think we've succeeded musically in what we're trying to do, for the most part. - Sat, 25 Feb 2006 8:04am

Yikes, for a second there I thought you were talking to me. I used to be huge on starting a band, but I suddenly realized that some people are born to perform, and some are born to produce (and some are born to manage), I guess I'm more production then performance. - Sat, 25 Feb 2006 11:15am

I think the main disconnect here is that this site is mainly visited by people into punk, metal, and other types of underground music. No offense, but anyone in a top 40 cover band posting here is BEGGING for flames. - Sat, 25 Feb 2006 6:06pm

Bring the flames then. I've played in:

- Originals bands - dozens including touring with Big Muff, Bovine Love Jelly, etc.

- played on a Cruise ship with a band packed with musicians from Berkley

- Toured the US and Europe

- done everything from symphony's, to dozens of shows (Pirates, Fiddler, etc.) to jazz trio's and big Bands

...but after hitting 30 in this town, I'm happier spending quality time with my children and performing with the Usual Suspects (some of the most 'talented' musicians I have ever played with) than writing and sobbing into my journal (EMO) or bitching without accomplishing anything (Punk).

... Hundreds of originals later, why can't we just play tunes we love to play (and fans love to dance to) without some anonymous tool saying we suck because they don't like Huey Lewis (of 80+ tunes, we have 2 Huey tunes). Hell, the Tower of Power loved touring with Huey, what the hell is this 'Der' fags musical background anyways?

Thanks for the support Dr. Vee. Back to you guys too. Music is about joy. My respect goes to Original bands too - so long as they respect the music and can play.

Like a TV show, if you don't like us. Turn the Channel. But, Der, if you are man/woman enough, tell us what your musical background is or where you play? I'd be happy to give an honest critique beyond two or three syllables... - Sat, 25 Feb 2006 11:49pm
