Hey all, looking to record four songs, hard rock, wondering if anyone has a recommendation?

I know Adam Sutherland does a good job, but he's busy for a couple months.

Thanks in advance. - Tue, 21 Feb 2006 9:20pm

This question always gets asked here. Talk with either Garry Brainless at the Rats Nest or ZippGunn at Sea o' Shit studios. Nuff said. - Tue, 21 Feb 2006 10:36pm

jobe baker is pretty radical...not a huge space but he has it dialed really tight and he has some great (all the classic stuff that gear nerds wet themselves over...it really does sound great though) analog gear in there. 500 bucks a day though, but that is what, for example, the hive goes for, and with the vintage front end stuff I think it is comparable (pro tolls hd but no board though). he also has 8 track 1 inch. its called baker studios. Also lucky mouse sounds wicked if your budget is skinnier. - Wed, 22 Feb 2006 10:34am

We just finished with Scott Henderson at Sea of Shit, and it was pretty phenomenal. (I'm the one that started that last thread looking for studios) We got 5 songs done for $400, and done really well at that. Scott's got a ton of experience, and you'll be shocked at the sound he gets out of his unbelievably messy studio. However, if you don't like recording off the floor then it'll cost you more.

For samples of the quality check out some songs off our EP at http://www.myspace.com/sanijav (plugplugplug) this only took one day of recording (and there's two more songs where those came from). - Wed, 22 Feb 2006 11:04am

Neil Cooke-Dallin from Captains of Industry/For Good or For Awesome just started up a studio. He's the guy who did the last AK47 and Ghosts recordings. He also did some sweet 4-track recording for the first Hot Hot Heat 7".

In fact, he's also just putting the finishing touches on a recording for the Grey Army.

I'm not sure of his fee structure, but you can email him at neil 'at' breakwatermedia.com and I'm sure he'll help y'all out.

He's got some samples of older stuff at http://www.breakwatermedia.com/soundportfolio.htm and the For Good Or For Awesome site: http://forgoodorforawesome.ca. - Wed, 22 Feb 2006 10:12pm

Wanna record something? Do like Laying Waste did and record everything off the floor, sounds awesome that way. :) - Sun, 26 Feb 2006 9:08pm

off the floor can be tough going, you really gotta have your shit together & be well rehearsed, but you really do get the vibe of the band recorded better that way. If you're able to do it, though, it will save you $$$ both on session time for tracking versus a session where you overdub everything, plus you don't have to pay someone to pro-tool your shit to death in editing after the fact.

I'm up for doing on-site multitrack recording right now i.e., at your place since I just moved my studio... just finished mixing a documentary (on A-Channel next monday nite @ 10 if anyone's interested), and I'd be right into doing a band recording. You can check my slightly-out-of-date site @ http://www.microphonic.ca/ + drop me a line if you're interested in chatting. I've worked for Supernova (the band, not the crooked promotions co.), singer/songwriter Adrienne Chouinard, Pushing up Daisies, and Jets Overhead in the past few months...

Cheers

Dirk
