Hey all you musician-type-people, we're looking at getting our demo professionally done over the next couple months and want to hear some reviews on the studios in town. I realize this post has definately seen light before, but I figured it doesn't hurt to be up-to-date.

Who recorded yours and what was your experience like? I'd rather hear from musicians, 'cause it's pretty unlikely a studio is going to admit they're run by a tone-deaf con-artist with a peg-leg and an eye-patch. We want only con-artists with peg-legs and eye-patches who ALSO have perfect pitch. If you feel the need to really rip into someone but don't want to seem like a dick in public, be a dick in private and email us at [email protected] .

Being a dick in public is much more exciting, however.

As much as I ain't a musician, and more like a wannabe, from what I've heard/seen (of demos that are at least 20 years old), Rat's Nest studios is pretty decent price wise (I guess), Garry charges studio space @ $20 per hour. Also look into Sea of Shit studios, Scott Henderson (who's in Killingflaw and David P. Smith) and Garry Brainless (who's in Micky Christ and The Remanes) each have 20+ years experience recording/producing. One person I've never met (but heard countless demos he's produced) was Dave Degrassi, but I dunno if he even records/produces anymore. Also, sound wise look at Adam Sutherland, he's produced (for example) demos/CD releases from theset and Jell, for instance. And I sorta produce, but I mainly work on old tape demos, I've never recorded a band (and don't plan to). There's a few names for ya. :) - Tue, 24 Jan 2006 5:08pm

I personally think that the recording that you have on your website is pretty much world class. Just one man's opinion. Look for a Juno in the mail. - Wed, 25 Jan 2006 4:28pm

If you want a great live off the floor sound than I suggest Scott Henderson (Sea of Shit). It's a cool vibe in his studio I found. There's also Dave from The Rod Iron Haulers. We got a great sound from his studio which he has since moved from but I'm sure he's up and running somewhere else now. Both recordings are from different bands than I'm in now. - Wed, 25 Jan 2006 5:11pm

I was wondering where that juno came from, I was expecting a different unlabelled cylindrical package... Don't think you're off the hook, Andy. You'll probably be in charge of everything but the drums.

I'm listening to the stuff Faces of Black recorded at Sea of Shit and it's sounding pretty tight. Are there any tunes from your other bands online? - Wed, 25 Jan 2006 5:44pm

I thought about starting a studio at the space above where the coffee place is at the corner of Douglas and ?!? (1 block before the Dougy pub) That used to be the space that Scott Henderson rented and there was a club down the street from there (on the second floor). - Wed, 25 Jan 2006 5:48pm

ratsnest is a fun place to record as with sea of shit, both gary and scott have it down to a science for efficiency and price... for a more produced sound tho i agree that adam sutherland would be the person around here to see.
I have recordings of all 3 ppl that i have done business with, if you would like to hear them contact me [email protected] - Thu, 26 Jan 2006 5:21pm

Wait a sec, which bands we're you in?!? I think that if a recording is over 15 years old and still sounds good, then it's worth checking out the producer of that recording. - Thu, 26 Jan 2006 6:04pm

we met at gary's studio i think a couple years ago. I was in Three Night Stand at the time, and have also recorded there with The Price of Mctucklin as with sea of shit too. I do agree tho if you have a demo which is 15 years old and still sounds good then meet the ppl that engineerd the process.
I've heard a whole variety of stuff from both rat's nest and s.o.s... and i'd have to say they are all consistant, in terms of quality and sound. Obveously with different styles comes different sounds, but the overall recording is always a good product from either of these guys. - Fri, 27 Jan 2006 2:03pm

Ah yes, speaking of, what ever did you guys do with what you recorded over at the Rats Nest?!? Yeah, Garry knows what he's doing in regards to recording a live signal. Cool hobby to have IMO. - Sun, 29 Jan 2006 3:47pm
