OK so a local vender pointed this out to me the other day and Im curious how people feel about it. Is it taboo to play a gig in victoria twice in the same week? What about playing the same bar two nights in the same week?

From what I've heard from bands in victoria, they all seem to speculate that you shouldn't play to often or you'll either rub people the wrong way or they'll get bored of you. - Tue, 25 May 2004 1:28am

I played Logan's twice in 3 days about 3 weeks ago. Of course the first time I was on bass for People's War and the second time I was plaing guitar & banjo for dp smith/Dad's Juice. I try not to play too often at the same places; tends to burn the local crowd out. - Tue, 25 May 2004 7:06am

Play as much as you want. When the city's sick of you... you'll know because there'll be no one at your show. Then take a break for a while and come back with new material.

Greenlaw Ave. played the shit out of the city while they were here... but every show was different. They'd do a full on show at Steamers, and then play the next night at Swan's just acoustic. They'd also do duos and shit like that. - Tue, 25 May 2004 7:19am

I guess it all depends on a band's writing process. For some bands, the writing is quick and they fire out lots of tunes on short order. If a band can keep their material fresh (and of good quality) I see no reason why they can't play every week or two. Or even twice or more in the same week. However, for some bands (like the band I'm in) the writing process is slow because we have many members and can only rehearse once a week. Therefore, it is easy to burn the public out on your set. It is generally better for us to play in Vic once every 4-6 weeks and concentrate on out of town gigs the rest of the time.
I guess the bottom line is that a band should play as much as they can/want to as long as they can fill the rooms. If they stop drawing a crowd, the bar owners will stop booking them. - Tue, 25 May 2004 8:27am

I think it depends on the band, but really its a small island and you definately don't want to burn out the local audience. If you are going to play alot try not to have the same line up every time, gig with as many bands as you can. - Tue, 25 May 2004 9:34am

This is just as I thought, everyone seems to have the opinon that playing more than once a week in vic with the same or similar set will somehow "burn" the audience out. So if you want to be a full time performer what do you do?
move I guess.... - Wed, 26 May 2004 1:05am

that's a no brainer: if you wanna be a full time performer...you TOUR...tour tour tour tour and some more touring just to be safe. After you've done some touring, come back, write new material, record another album, and then tour some more, and some more after that too. Once you're done with that tour, do another one. Repeat ad nauseum. - Wed, 26 May 2004 5:42am
