this is an important issue. A know alot of bands who have done things they never would have been able to without FACTOR. With the new liberal agenda, there is a very strong chance that FACTOR will be no more, and the bands who rely on it will be pushed aside by anyone with money, regardless of talent.

Take a few minutes to visit the above website, and you will find a prepared letter for your MP as well as a link to your MP's info ( ie: their email address ) If you care, cut n paste that mofo and email to your MP. - Wed, 19 May 2004 5:01am

Factor is, IMHO, the biggest waste of taxpayer dollars in the history of Canadian music. Good riddance to it, if in fact it goes the way of the dodo. - Wed, 19 May 2004 9:28am

sounds like all the lame bands you were in chronically got rejected by factor and now you're bitter because you try live off your mediocre past by bringing it up when your knowledge of any subject is questioned.
factor is a great thing. but maybe the natives would be better off with that money, don't you think? it seems as though they deserve more than a bunch of freeloading musicians like mi*cock* and meatpuller seven.
for christ sake, if it weren't for factor, bruce cockburn wouldn't be around today and that would be a crime against music. - Wed, 19 May 2004 10:39am

hahah uhmm.. Ok well it IS funny even if you are a delusional fool.

But Zippy, you are ever so knowledgable about the industry, please enlighten me with your reasons?

I know a number of bands that have toured thanks to Factor and a few who have gotten better recordings than they might have afforded otherwise because of Factor.

Should they do away with musician grants and loans entirely or revamp the system? If so, how? - Wed, 19 May 2004 11:34am

for once?
i've been donating money and time to the causes of minorities for years. every so often i have my driver chauffer me through reserves and throw change and half empty imported beers out the window. they don't always realize the beers are there though because they look like empties that just blend right in with the rest of the trash lying around.
not to mention the foundation i started in mexico which accepts money from poor residents and brings them to a better life in north america in the back of a tractor trailer. some call it smuggling, but i call it good samaritan importing. going to start the same kind of business from china using shipping crates and leaky freighters. i have a few of them lying around doing nothing, so i might as well help out some chineuse.
save factor! that way i don't have to shell out money to get people like you and your 8th rate music the hell away from me. - Wed, 19 May 2004 2:17pm

Gotta go with ZG on this one...Factor is not going to make or break the Canadian music scene. Most bands are not worth wasting tax payer's money on anyways.

>>>if it weren't for factor, bruce cockburn wouldn't be around today

Highly debatable. I personally think Cockburn's talent and business connections were much bigger factors in his success. - Wed, 19 May 2004 5:54pm

I dont think it will make or break a music scene, and maybe you guys are all credit card holding responsible types in bands that can easily earn $500 + per night while on tour.

As for those bands who have NO money and earn $50-$200 per show on tour, in Canada where it costs minimum $100 in gas just to get to the next city, which is the norm for most underground bands, then having that extra bit of cake to help on the tour to cover such costs, really helps.

Not to mention international tour support. Its really nice that you fellas have enough money in your band fund to fly 5 return to Europe, and actually earn a enough money there to maybe cover your costs. But for those bands in the real world, such journies are next to impossible without some form of tour support. Maybe your label pays for it, I dont know, maybe you can take a second mortgage out on your house, or maybe you dont have bills and rent to pay while you are overseas.

Personally, I live in a world where my mother doesnt keep my room for me while Im on tour. No, my landlord keeps the open hand for rent while my income drops to minus zero as I spend more on the road by a long shot then the band will ever earn. Sure , Id do THAT anyways for the love of the music, but hey, if someone wants to fork over .35 cents per KM for fuel while we drive 11 000 Km across Canada and back, well Im not going to say NO!

Dont get the wrong idea anyone, the above scenarios are all hypothetical.

MIke I understand and can respect that touring Canada is tough, and I can respect the government will waste "our" money anyways so why not waste it on musicians but...

Remember being a rock star is a hobby or passion or sport. Its not education or health care.

I see Factor going to a lot of bands that a) shouldn't or b) don't really need it.

FACTOR is great if the money comes from a luxury tax... say non-canadian CD and concert sales but tariffs are bad so...

Some things that will help Canadian music I believe:

Drop the fees assoiated with touring the US. Drop the fees a US band has to pay to come to Canada. If Meat Locker 7 could swing down to Washington State nice and easy for some shows.

It could create a very viable concert circut for indie bands. Imagine being able to do an easy one week tour that hits Victoria, Vancouver, Bellingham, Seattle and Portland. If you didn't need to pay $400 bucks up front how easy and cost effective would that be? And only need to book one week off work!

What if Lucky Bar could get The Bloodbrothers or The Pale to come up for a show? Victoria bands would get a great chance to open for some good quality Seattle area rock and Lucky would only need to come up with hotel and ferry and not government taxes.

More support for public broadcasting. If you could get your music heard, then you will make money.

More support for venues. Less tax, possible all ager/licensed show venues, open till 4AM... I dunno... sounds like a no-brainer but I don't run a night club.

Just some ideas... I think we need a Political Rock Lobby Group :) - Thu, 20 May 2004 3:55pm

Truth be told, if we could easily tour the states more often, we would. I mean, living in this area, unless you want to play cities like Penticton/Kelowna/Kamloops etc. ( which are not so bad on weekends) then the only real populated areas are south.

Just like a band in Ontario have so many options, so many cities to play at, between Ont and QC there's a 2 week tour right there and your never more than 500 miles from home.

Stateside is fine, if you can 'sneak' over the border with gear. But with the new Homeland Security BS and the 4-5 month wait for a P2 Visa, its more hassle. To qualify for a P2 now, the band must have all dates booked. But the P2 takes 4-5 months to process, so that means the band must book a tour 6 months in advance. Then, if the P2 gets denied, the band must burn all its bridges and cancel the tour.

BUT, if your a big rockstar with a pocket full of cake, then you can pay $1000 US for a P2 Visa which gets processed in 3 weeks. ( as opposed to about $150 US for a 5 month wait )

AND even though the P2 is valid for 1 year, the band must have at least 1 show per month booked in that year or it expires.

Soooo.. Canada here we come :)

I wouldnt mind hearing how a few of the other local bands have toured stateside recently. whether they used one of the many tricks to get gear over the border, or rented down there, or just went legit with the Visa .. Big Muff, Zapnnin Black, Iskra? etc.

I say recently, because alot of the new waiting periods and such have only come into play since 9-1-1. - Thu, 20 May 2004 4:12pm

Factor money almost always goes to those who least need it, like the aforementioned Bruce Cockburn who got government money to record his, what, 23rd album? Sarah McLauglin was getting Canada Council and/or Factor money even when she was at the top of the charts. And where would Barney Bentall be without this money? Yet the people who REALLY need the dough almost always get the bum's rush, and for the stupidest reasons. I give you the mighty Ford Pier, who has applied countless times in the past for assistance to help him get his recordings out. He had to categorize his music for the pencil pushers and so called himself an "alternative" artist, since his record was coming out on Sudden Death (DOA's label). When he started his 3rd album (Pier-ic Victory) he applied again, only this time as a singer-songwriter since the label that wanted him was Black Hen (Zubot & Dawson's label). He was told it was a rubber stamp kind of thing but no, he was the very first Black Hen artist rejected. Why? Because "we've already rejected this guy as an alternative artist". So despite having a label ready to put it out and Canada's foremost record producer turning the knobs (P. M. Wojehoda (sp.?)) he was out of luck. Meanwhile there are dozens if not hundreds of TERRIBLE records put out every year in Canada that would have otherwise languished in much deserved obscurity were it not for the deep pockets of the Factor/Canada Council crowd. I once helped a local engineer complile a compilation of artists who were, to a man, financed by the government, some 25 or so CD's. Every one of them was useless shit, the kind of crap you would expect to see on some show like "Rock Camp" (a highly recommended show for those of you with a sick sense of humour). As for me, I have never sought nor recieved any money for my music from any branch of the government and I never will; even if they asked if I wanted it I would tell them to go to hell. Abolish Factor, abolish VideoFact, abolish the Canada Council for the "arts". It's all just a fucking waste of taxpayers money, and your time. - Fri, 21 May 2004 6:04am

BigMuff did our last two tours legit- visa and all. (The first time we pertended we were going across to record, apologized at the border for not knowing better and were lucky they were in a good mood...) both times we had the full application in 4 months in advance, but four months in advance is the time they 'reccommend' you have the application in by and doesn't guarantee you anything. as a result we found out 3 weeks before leaving that our visa was 'probably not' going to be processed in time. Luckily we had one show that guaranteed us enough money to pay the shitty 1000$ fee- and by that point 2 members had quit their jobs to tour so we weren't about to stop! I would have to agree with ML7- any touring support you can get is TOTALLY neccessary, your chances of getting gurantees- especially the first time out are virtually non-existant. but then, getting shows booked 6 months to a year and a half in advance as an unknown band is also virtually impossible. (you also need to have a guarantee with each of these shows that says you will be making at least 50$for each band member for each show- very tough to get a bar in the middle of nowhere to guarantee you 250$!!) and as they said, it's not like your bills/rent stop while you are on the road. We haven't gotten any factor grants yet but we are hoping to get one in cause being too broke to do what you want to do sucks. ZAppnin black also went legit on the visa and paid the $$... the best way to do it is to befriend a promoter/bar owner in the US who will book 'potential' shows for you way in advance.... - Fri, 21 May 2004 10:02am
