Hey anyone know the difference between
C#minor & AMajor 7th chord?

Just kidding.

My real question is, I wonder how important/useful y'all find music theory in writing tunes & jammin & such.

Although I've forgotten much of the in-depth theory I learned when I was young, I find that knowing even basic theory makes jamming/rehearsing/writing with other people so much easier. Instead of saying "put your index finger on this string on this fret, and put your middle finger on this fret, etc." you can just shout out a chord, or a progression, and there's less time wasted. - Thu, 6 May 2004 10:04am

Never used it!

Seriously tho, about the only time I ever needed it was in studio reading charts when I'd be hired to play on other peoples trax. Otherwise it's always been a hear it, then play it kinda thing. I do think it's funny that in classical music there apparently IS a difference between Ab and G# ( The same key on a piano!) - Thu, 6 May 2004 4:18pm

well, there is no difference between Ab and G#, but if you were in the key of Emaj you would use G# as the 3rd not Ab because A is gonna be the 4th. it has always got to be the 3rd letter, right.

this is interesting because sometimes it can lead to a situation where you use a B# instead of C. - Fri, 7 May 2004 2:59pm

Haven't touched anything since High school band, but it is handy being able to read music, esp when playing Cranium. - Fri, 7 May 2004 4:41pm

Well I probably know more theory than is good for me, but I find it very useful in both songwriting and jamming. Knowing the difference between a Cmaj7 and a Csus4 helps me in coming up with a good bass line. Also useful in writing vocal harmonies.

However, it's probably best not to discuss Neapolitan Sixth chords at, say, a punk gig... - Sun, 9 May 2004 5:23pm

I somehow suspect my ignorance of music theory may have something to do with my inability to come up with an original solo to save my life... - Sun, 9 May 2004 6:26pm

Lately i'm all about keys, & chords in that key, & how to change key if you want to.

Maybe it's too much beatles?

Theory should only be used to expand your options not limit them.

for example never say we "can't" play that chord next because its not in this key.

theory should add to your musical ideas not take away from them. So theory is great as long as youaren't rigid and can look beyond it every now and then - Mon, 10 May 2004 2:55pm
