So did they release a demo? That band rocks!

BTW: If the person who did Monsoon Afternoon could get ahold of me, awesome, that track, even if it was a Beta, has total replay value. Nuff said... - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 2:13am

Stupid Dodge Tradesman - rustiest piece of shit that ever moved from point A to point B. Kinda miss it in an "ugly duckling" kinda way. Took us half-way across Canada, though (well - Saskatoon, actually) and then down to the states in summer '97 "tour". The eight-so(y)ng cassette demo in question is self-titled and has soy plants on front cover and had the dumbest stickers in them, including the bare-knuckle fighters, taken from the "12 O'Clock High"(?) movie. The "Tales From Tofugraphic Oceans" 7-inch was our only other release. It had four songs and possibly the most annoying cover art of all time. Honestly - it hurt, but in an intentional kinda way. - Sun, 18 Apr 2004 2:33pm

Hehehe. We laugh now, but assuming he lasts long enough _Griphin_'s desire to pseudo-release some of those obscure demos will be desireable by many with or without band consent. I assume it is only out of respect that _Griphin_ even approaches bands on the topic. The fact that they don't get it is rather unfortunate for everyone involved. I have the same urge to do the same with other semi-ancient projects(ie. to bring those recordings into the modern world, which otherwise few would ever hear.)

I happen to give him (don't let me down now Griphin!) the benefit of a doubt for genuinely wishing to see all this music stand the test of time.

There does come a point where the bands' original creative rights are outdone by a larger desire to preserve culture (a term used in any way which is comfortable for you) beyond the existing generation.

Its a topic I am extremely interested in, and my only advice to people of like mind is to capture as much of the original release as possible (Cover, Liner notes, etc), and if possible try to ensure the duplicates attempt to improve the longevity of the product beyound what they possess already. (Get rid of cassettes for instance)

aCk... teach me to go on an ale binge, and talk shit again. However, THIS time I didn't ask for my posts to be deleted (I swear I have an alcoholic alter-ego :). I actually was curious about Soy because I bought a compilation called "An Anthology of Underground Music in Canada Volume II" and the Victoria bands on it, other then Soy, were Black Vein Prophesy (Hind Guts) and Skid Missel (Bomb Drop). I happen to like the Soy track, and was hoping to learn it to perhaps cover it in the near future (yeah, LOVE those double kicks). If anyone wants to hear any of these tracks, E-Mail me.

Now to the demo question, I've been doing the "Victoria Demo Restoration Projekt" as a side hobby for at least 2 years now, but it works in phases (some months I'll do like a dozen demos, and some month's I do jack). Similar in nature to RCMPsite, and that Victoria comp. Jason Flowers is trying to release, I just want to keep an archive of any bands for my personal amusement. I really don't know what to do with all the material though, yet. I talk to bands first before I master the stuff over to hard drive (and eventually CD) out of respect, I'm just a fan damnit! :) I find a lot of bands don't even have the demos anymore (Carolyn Mark for instance I gave a copy of Wing Night to, and she really appreciated it). I get REALLY passionate about the music, but hey, if it wasn't for people like me, the music might get lost. Currently up to 5.6 gigs of local music. Perhaps I could next database release dates/bands and put it up on the web, but this takes time and motivation. Ideas?!? - Sun, 18 Apr 2004 8:13pm
