OK, I've had too many ale's, but perhaps what I have to say makes sense...

Look, I find a lot of bands really don't know about promotion and merch... I ran into one of the members of Mission of Christ at that Tango gig, first thing i asked him is if it was possible to copy that Demo 80 to Cd and "give" away copies. Perhaps I got to point, but it wierded him out (hey he was at the Tango gig, so I thought it was cool). Well not only did he get wierded out, but rather then talk to my face, he asked a friend of mine at the gig who I was and what I wanted to do with the demo. Same thing happened with Demonation, awesome demo, lead singer is sitting on it, and he's not making coin from it. But talk to Little Brian, and he's all paranoid over me making money from it. That's sad, I'm a fan, and would never makes a sick amount of cash off anyone's creativity. C'mon people, I chatted with someone from Gashly Crumb tonight, I told him I was more then willing to vote for him on Garageband, and he didn't have a clue about the vote. SO hopefully I explained it proper to him. It seems that a lot of bands don't have a clue. So here's the deal, why do I care about this shit?!? You have a idea, E-Mail me. BTW: I haven't the slightest why I even posted this, go figure. - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 1:22am

Wait wait wait....

Are you saying that we won't become a rock stars by playing a few gigs at Lucky and Steamers and waiting for an A&R guy to discover us? - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 1:39am

Wow quick reply! No, what I'm saying is these bands shouldn't get ripped off. Look, if I ever start a band, damn rights I wanna figure out what's going on. But what hurts me is there's a lot of artists in this town who rock but can be taken advantage of. Look at Kurdt Cobain, so talented, but taken advantage of (LID is influencing me in this discussion, 100 Pints of Lager could sell so many copies, total replay value, but they sign and there get ripped off). Man I go broke going to gigs, but I totally support the local scene, and in return there rather nice to me. I don't understand why, nuff respect...

I'll probably regret this tomorrow, but i mean well... - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 1:40am

Geez man, why are you trying to make so much money off other bands? You're trying to rip off bands and sell their cd's for yourself. Won't you stop making cash off other bands man? You have to stop selling cd's from other bands to make money man. Will you please stop ripping off evvery band in town by selling their cd's for profit? Stop ripping off bands man. - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 6:40am

Actually Phil I mentioned this to you last week and apparently you didnt pay attention. Nobody asks if they can make a tape and give it away. As fow asking the band members, they probably just think your a total freak for even asking and thats probably why they got weirded out. Naturally they think your probably trying to sell them, why else would you even bother asking? Unless it's just recognition you want. Then it just makes you seem kinda weird and were right back to them thinking your a freak. - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 7:23am

Some bands are cool with letting people copy their cd's. We did it for our first two demos and although we didnt sell as many cd's as hoped because everyone copied it and handed it to their friends it lead to us getting a couple phone calls from labels down state side. But dont get pissed if a band says you cant copy their work. We're artists and dont take lightly on being ripped off. When was the last time you went to an art gallery and asked if you could copy of a painting? - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 10:38am

Griphin,

Change your name to Griphin Records, wear an ugly suite and drive a BMW and I garuntee every band in this town will jump all over themselves to let you copy their music and sell it for profit. Not only that, they'll thank you for the honour of being "signed." - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 6:02pm

Some bands might not be so proud of the way the recording turned out or songs that are on these demos. I think if they are stoked on the recordings they would want more people to hear it? - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 7:27pm

So then i take it that you copied it without permission.. way to steal! but hey if you bought it then it's all groovy welcome to the world of authorized copies, just like when you buy a CD - Sat, 17 Apr 2004 12:40am

I heard the first semi-finshined mix of our material yesterday, and some of it I'd rather nobody heard...... But if we can get it fixed to the point that I like it, I'd rather have it heard than worry about getting $3 or $10 or whatever for each copy..... - Sat, 17 Apr 2004 11:41am

And the discussion continues...

ROSS BAY writes: You have to stop selling cd's from other bands to make money man. Will you please stop ripping off evvery band in town by selling their cd's for profit? -=- Now you know I wouldn't EVER do that (I don't make profit off songs I didn't play), and even if I did make money (doubtful), those bands get paid!!! Merch dude, merch!!!

KICKBACK writes: But dont get pissed if a band says you cant copy their work. We're artists and dont take lightly on being ripped off. -=- I'm not pissed about that, I'm just frustrated that if there's a demand for a CD, many bands don't capitalize on it. I can see why bands get kinda freaked, but hey if someone's interested, strike when the iron is hot! Besides, bands do get their work copyrighted right? (Easy enough to figure out). Perhaps I should figure out a website which explains how to properly distro your bands work, as well as promotion, etc. I'm surprized there isn't one out already.

KICKBACK also writes: So then i take it that you copied it without permission.. way to steal! -=- OK, so there's a ton of demos I'm looking for, which were only released on tape, so if you can point me in the right direction, I'll buy those demos.

Jason Brown writes: they probably just think your a total freak for even asking and thats probably why they got weirded out. Naturally they think your probably trying to sell them, why else would you even bother asking? Unless it's just recognition you want. Then it just makes you seem kinda weird and were right back to them thinking your a freak. -=- This is a good point. But I'm just asking for permission, why the heck they would think I'm making money off this is beyond me. But yeah, bands that aren't around anymore should sell there work. Speaking of, you still got any of your older material kicking around? Oh, and I should think about buying those earlier AWT CDs off ya while I think about it.

Brandon writes: Maybe the bands dont want the demos or cds all over the place? -=- It's not like I'm making hundreds of CDs. :)

Gare writes: Some bands might not be so proud of the way the recording turned out or songs that are on these demos. I think if they are stoked on the recordings they would want more people to hear it? -=- Depends on who you talk to.

Anyhow... I tend to get really passionate about the existing music scene as well as the scene from the last 20 years or so, so if I tend to act a little wierd, well I'm a freak, go figure! :) - Sun, 18 Apr 2004 8:31pm
