Well I've been trying to learn the electric for over a year now, and recently I've been able to get my speed up as well as play half decently (figuring out songs). But my question for all you experienced guitarists is: Can a complicated song (eg. Nirvana-Dive) still be played using single chords rather then the translations I've seen (eg. more then 2 strings) and still make it sound half decent? And fer those who are already in bands, how do you decide when to use single chords, then use a power or standard chord to add emphasis. What I'm trying to figure out is: How do you do, what you do?!?

Perhaps I need someone to show me a few chords and take it from there. Comments?!? - Wed, 14 Apr 2004 12:00pm

Hey griphin,,,

From my experience I always use BarChords (power chords). I find them more stable. Also, with using Bar chords, you have to option of muting with the left hand as well as the right. Another bonus from using Bar Chords, is the fact that you can keep the one same chord structure and move up and down the neck.

Remember this important point.........

If you know Fmajor bar chord, you have all you need to play every "simple" major chord by moving up the fret board.
You start at F, move up one fret, now you have F#major, the next 2 frets brings you G#major etc. So, by applying bar chords you have opened an avenue to maintain ALL chords with only one structure.

Try the same as above for minor chords as well. If you dont know how to make a minor or major bar chord, simply start with the reflective chord (minor or major) in E. Then simply use your index finger to form the NUT and move up the neck. I know i soud like an idiot, but that should help you. - Wed, 14 Apr 2004 12:43pm

Start taking lessons and don't stop. Ever.

Practice as much as you possibly can.

Wait two years and then see how good you are. - Wed, 14 Apr 2004 1:47pm

Lessons?!? Been trying to get lessons for a few month's now, perhaps I'm just not trying hard enough or something. Perhaps in the meantime I should look for people to jam with, this way I can pick up some pointers. When I was hanging around with The Remanes, I learned a lot about how bands write songs right up to producing demos, that was awesome.

Well I have a natural sense of rhythm (don't need a click track) and I can play a riff I've heard (I figured out a Eagles of Death Metal track by fluke), but I need to learn a few chords, and figure out a way to play fast for extended periods of time (I find that after 20 minutes it gets harder to play). Just general pointers really. - Thu, 15 Apr 2004 2:09am

(in comes steve's volunteer promoter)..... if Laprider is offering you lessons.... do it. I have been learning under him for a while now, and my guitar ability has grown more in the last year than in 8 yrs of self-learning combined.... speaking of which, Steve... we need to hook up! - Thu, 15 Apr 2004 7:20am

Here are a few that may help. For fast accurate picking, anchor either your (picking hand) pinky or ring finger to the guitar and use it as a pivot.Try to keep your thumb in line with you your middle finger(fretting hand).Gather up lots of yoda like patience and practise lots of up down(alternate) picking, 1234,4321 etc(chromatic scale). To keep things fun see if you can get tab to songs you like and slowly work through them(you will learn the fret board from a different perspective) - Thu, 15 Apr 2004 7:44am

Yeah tab is easy to find, I use ascii numeric tab, but I also use Power Tab and Guitar Pro 4 so i can hear how tab sounds. All I need to figure out next is how normal music notation works and it should be easy. (Saw an awesome Nirvana tab book, but they don't show numeric tab). - Thu, 15 Apr 2004 5:10pm
