i dissagree. anyone who doesn't at least have appreciation for this band is either

a)un musical
b) if you are musical, you dont know anything about anything

this band probably practises for DAYS if not WEEKS on their songs... they are constantly playing poly rythems, making 4/4 sounding like a monsoon with random accents.

so what if you dont like the music, dont listen to it... but saying they dont kick ass? Id like to see you pick up the rythem in less than 10 mins (which would be impressive) of the 5th song on their Cd... hell, if you could tell me what time signature they were in id have a smidgen of respect for your comment.

but unfortunatly, you are obvisouly as musically intelligent as a 13 year old blink182 groupie. cool! keep listening to them power chords! ya! cuz you know it takes YEARS of practise and sweat to learn how to play somehting like blink182!

or better yet... lets just thrash the hell out of our instruments, fuck music... LETS MAKE NOISE... THAT TAKES WAY MORE SKILL!!!

if you hate lythic, i guess you dont like tool either. or the mars volta, hell, sparta, who are they!? right?

i could seriously rant for 500 more words but i'll save everyone the grief.

if you dont know anyhting about music, your not entitled to give your opinion about it... period. you can enjoy it, like it, not like it, but you sure as hell can't judge it if you dont know squat!

gah, anyways. - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 9:09pm

I like them a lot...
Like Mr.Aylott said, they do some pretty crazy tight technical stuff. They have great stage presence, energetic performances, & awesome lyrics.
Hell, their website even kicks ass. - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 10:02pm

Mr.Aylott,
I would consider myself to be
a) musical, and
b) know a little bit about music

I'm not the biggest fan of Lythic Blue's music, but I'm not here to put them down, because I do agree they put on a great show. What I'd like to point out, however, is that just because a band can play in a time signature other than 4/4 doesn't automatically make them amazing. It's how they incorporate the time signature and changes into making it musical and how it benefits the song as a whole. Tool is successful in this regard, because their time changes feel natural within the song and only add to the musicality, rather that detract from it. Listening to Lythic's stuff, I don't think they've achieved that. Yet. It's tremendous that they are able to do it, and they should definitely continue to experiment with odd time meters and so on, but their songwriting needs improvement in my honest opinion. (I'm definitely not bashing Lythic! If anything, this is constructive critism. Hell, I've had no success with writing songs...!)

What truly bothers me about your post is your assumption that all 4/4 music is crap and full of power chords. Listen to Pyramid Song & Myxamatosis by Radiohead. Tell me what time signature they're in, and tell me how many power chords are played. You can still be creative with songwriting in 4/4.
It angers me that you feel you have to put down any musician who plays in 4/4. Are you implying that that makes them less of a musician? I might come across as putting down Lythic Blue (which I'm not, I'm just expressing my opinion, which I'm entitled to), but you Mr.Aylott, have come across as putting down all musicians on this board.

Sincerely,

cooper

I didn't say didn't appriciate em, I just don't like em. Jay is a good drummer though, glad to see he's put that music class to good use. And what the fuck is this about no technicality? I fucking teach theory and "pure technicality" for a living, so I think I know about polyrhythms and tempo. Where did you go to school? By the way, I'd like to see half the "Great" drummers around town play some grind, they'd blow a gasket! - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 10:47pm

i never said i hated them, i just think theyre kinda average. it's not like i want them to stop making music and fall into the crevaces of depravery.

you don't even know what the hell listen to, why should you say "you sound like a blink 182 groupie"?

" i guess you dont like tool either. or the mars volta, hell, sparta, who are they!? right?" wrong. i like those bands. - Wed, 31 Mar 2004 11:33am

could it be possible that someone doesn't like the kind of music they play? I bet you could find tons of awesome jazz musicians that would hate lythic blue's music. - Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:20pm

I don't think it's solely the time signatures that make Lythic a really wicked band (however they do have some rad time signatures). Listen to the drums and guitar in that band, they have some pretty complex parts in there. I like bands that write a piece that sounds more of a movement. Lythic does it well. However, wierd time signatures are indeed overrated. But as i said, time signatures are not what makes this band. - Wed, 31 Mar 2004 6:32pm

Like them or not, they do have skill, and they are just plain different than a lot of music. As one person mentioned, tool is successful with their odd meter because its natural and feels smooth, but just the same, lythic has a little thing going on with really jagged rhythms, as well as smooth, and melodic stuff. What i think really makes this band however, is the fact that they have been playing together FOREVER. Seriously, the original four have been together since 2000, and prolly jammed together before that. These guys are usually pretty tight, and have good chemestry.

Everyone seems to have made good points here though, and seem to argue the same one: one cannot simply disregard all music that is in 4/4, or hate all music that is a little jagged. well yeah maybe not everyone was saying that but whatever. Oh yeah, smallhorse ate my ass last night, and it fuckin ruled. - Wed, 31 Mar 2004 7:00pm

Its not that i hate 4/4,its just that alot of the stuff you hear these days are in 4/4. I mean, you can make 7 sound like 4 (that foo fighters song is in 7 and i think it rocks)... I just credit lythic with having accomplished what lots of other victoria bands hacnt... originality. (not that ever band out of victoria sounds the same, its just that lythic stands out for me) - Thu, 1 Apr 2004 9:15am

SweetGrass here...I saw these guys a few years ago at an all ager. I was impressed with them then, decent guys and knew how to play. The evening of music wasn't exactly my cup of tea but when Lythic played, I did take out my ear plugs and enjoyed them alot. - Fri, 2 Apr 2004 9:55am
