This is an open invitation to all users on the Island to submit ideas on what they would like to see from this site.
I am also looking for feedback from bands & promoters on how we could help make your shows more successful.

1) Mandatory logins, so that no Anon posters can post. Look at nearly every other BBS on the web, and they are all like this. It has improved greatly since the recent changes, but the level of slagging is still pretty damn high, and if we want this to be the Victoria chat board, that is cool, if we want this to be about Van Isle music, then it needs to be seen as professional.

2) format like other BBS's so you can quote other posts, search for posts, other useful utilities like that. Private messaging. All these things increase the capabilities of the site, and in turn, attract more pro people.

look at http://www.recordingproject.com/bbs/index.php for a phenomenal example of a well constructed BBS.

Might be a good idea to nominate some different people to moderate the different forums. No Nazis, but even handed people who can sort the wheat from teh chaff, so to speak, and move offensive stuff to the Quarantine. I think it is worth keeping the quarantine, a fine balance between letting people vent, but keeping it pro is critical - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 2:50pm

I agree- a mandatory sign in. Too much garbage goes on here, and I think it deters some folks from posting because of it. Also, a spell check option for the many that are too lazy or just plain illiterate. Just one opinion... - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 3:11pm

I highly support everything Ticklefish just said. The message boards on this site feels someone made it up from scratch out of their basement, yet didn't quite get around to finishing it (no offense to the creator since I know how much effort it takes to do such things). There are TONS of free and fully featured packages out there for ENTIRE websites including full blown message boards. Why the aren't being used here is well beyond my comprehension...

As far as other features go, a better "Show Listing" section in the form of a visual calendar where each show is a link. Show it one month at a time and perhaps a drop down list that shows all months at least 6 months in the future with a number of how many booking in each month.
example:
January (6)
February (19)
March (20)
etc...

Fully integrate all the boards you have (vic, van isle and vancouver). Still maintain show listings by area, but why not bring all of these people together! It's not like we're all really far apart that what might be discussed in one area would be totally irrelevant to another. You would likely have to add more regional catagories to certain things like musicians etc but it would still be nice to see a bigger scene talking together.

I have about a million other suggestions but they are all about the functions on this message board, that would all be cleared up by implementing one of the existing packages out there.

Thanks in advance for whatever you may do. - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 3:58pm

this BBS is a great example of some things that would make the bulletin boards of livevic and livevanisle much better:

+searchable posts (no more of this asking the same question, answered only two days ago.)
+profile w/ Private Messaging
+NO MORE ANONYMOUS POSTERS/ONE ACCOUNT PER USER

and much more!

these would all bring maximum efficiency and provide content that we can all use and enjoy. - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 6:36pm

The only way for your board to be successful, do like we used to do with the BBS's. When someone registers, you voice verify them. This way, you don't get an asshole verified, and you get to know the user who wishes to join the board. - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 11:04pm

That's pretty unrealistic, Griphin. Email verification is good enough. I don't think Nev or Scott have the time to go and phone every person that posts on their forums.

The days of The X are long over.

I'm not going to voice varify anyone... its bad enough I have to read your damn emails!! =)

Nothing but love for you all really!!

Seriously though Manditory logins might be a good idea, at first we wanted to have the least number of hoops to jump though for people to start using the site (I get turned off posting or getting involved with so many sites just cuz i'm too lazy to enter my info), now that we're more established that might work.

As for the show listings suggestion I think keeping the cities seperate is a good idea, as we plan to expand more in the future it WILL get cluttered if we try and have everything on one site, and having a monthly view i've never found one that I thought looked good or was as easy to view as this... if you can show me what you mean its always an option however honestly I do think we have one of the best show listing and viewing systems arround. However I will agree the message board can use some work =)

It takes us a while to do anything though as we all have many other projects on the go as well as livevictoria.com so sometimes it ends up getting put on the back burner, its cool that you all keep comming to the site and enjoy what we do though, keep the ideas comming for how we can improve we honestly do read them and consider ways to implement them... REALLY! - Wed, 31 Mar 2004 12:08am
