QOTSA SPLIT?
Josh kicks Nick Oliveri out of the band!
10 Feb 2004

Josh Homme has kicked Nick Oliveri out of Queens of the Stone Age, PlayLouder can exclusively report.

Josh is fed up of Nick's partying, and has decided he doesn't want him in the band anymore. Also gone is occasional collaborator Mark Lanegan, also known for his acclaimed work with the Screaming Trees, and his own band, The Mark Lanegan Band.

As Oliveri wasn't present on the first album, and Lannegan is only a recent collaborator, Josh Homme has the rights to their name. All of the players are working on seperate projects right now.

A source said "it was their last tour in Australia that gave [Nick] the push, it was all out of control. But it's not hard to believe they are ready to split after 19 months of solid touring basically. That's rock and roll."

In other news, Brent Bjork, drummer from Kyuss and Fu manchu, is recording an album in Joshua Tree (where Eighties Matchbox recently recorded their new record). Brent was in the UK in December playing drums in Nick Oliveri's side project Mondo Generator. - Tue, 10 Feb 2004 4:10pm

Looks to be true:

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE Part Ways With Bassist NICK OLIVERI - Feb. 11, 2004

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE have officially parted ways with bassist Nick Oliveri.

According to MTV.com, Oliveri has unexpectedly left the band, breaking off a musical relationship with frontman Josh Homme that goes back to their days playing together in KYUSS in the early '90s.

"A number of incidents occurring over the last 18 months have led to the decision that the two can no longer maintain a working partnership in the band," reads a terse statement from the band's management.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE's web site is now listing SCREAMING TREES member Van Conner as the group's bassist. Also gone is drummer Joey Castillo (ex-DANZIG), who has apparently been replaced by another SCREAMING TREES member, Barrett Martin.

Homme is currently on tour in England drumming with side project EAGLES OF DEATH METAL. The band's debut album, "Peace Love Death Metal", comes out March 23.

As I saw on another board it just means less filler punk-like songs on QOTSA releases. As long as Josh keeps on putting out the quality material, I don't forsee a problem. - Wed, 11 Feb 2004 5:43pm

I agree with Hell.... besides, the Screaming Trees rhythm section is pretty killer.

Six Shooter (Nick's weak punk song) and Another Love Song were the weak links on Songs For The Deaf IMO.
I am not again good, strong punk songs. However, Nick doesn't seem to write those. Did you like Nick's material, Ty? - Thu, 12 Feb 2004 6:07am

Actually, I was just being an ass. I could barely tell you one QotSA song from another.
As far as Nick goes, he was great when he played bass for the Dwarves (as Rex Everything) and his vocal track on the Rise Above compilation was really good. - Thu, 12 Feb 2004 6:45am

In the wake of this tragic news, I am even more pleased that we went and saw them play last time they were in Vancouver!

So long as Mr. Homme sees fit to continue on his merry way with the Eagles of Death Metal, and the Desert Sessions, I will be content. - Thu, 12 Feb 2004 12:33pm

I knew you were being an ass, just didn't know if you were serious.
I am not knocking his playing or voice. Just his songwriting.
Here's some updated news...appears the Screaming Trees guys are not in after all:

UPDATE: OLIVERI, LANEGAN Out Of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - Feb. 12, 2004

Contrary to an article posted at MTV.com last night (since corrected), SCREAMING TREES members Van Conner (bass) and Barrett Martin (drums) have NOT joined QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.

The somewhat confusing QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE "family tree" on the group's web site was apparently the source of the mix-up, with MTV.com mistakenly misreading the tree to indicate that Conner and Martin have been enlisted to replace Nick Oliveri and Joey Castillo, respectively.

While Oliveri's departure has now been confirmed by the band's management, there is nothing to indicate that Castillo has left the group. Meanwhile, a posting on the web site of vocalist Mark Lanegan (SCREAMING TREES) appears to confirm reports that the singer is no longer a member of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. According to the his web site, Lanegan will devote his time to his own band, which is scheduled to release an album, titled "Bubblegum", in the spring.

The ongoing status of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE is unknown at this time. Representatives for the group had not responded to multiple requests for comment, according to Billboard.com. - Thu, 12 Feb 2004 3:54pm

I'm sure that Homme will even work with Oliveri and Lannegan in the future. Even on songs for the deaf there were tons of guest musicians. I just don't think that Homme likes that one for all, all for one band shit. Look at the dessert sessions and how many artists are involed. Have you ever been to the family tree on their web site? It's huge! I think he just wants to draw influence from other artist and progress as a musician - Sun, 15 Feb 2004 12:24am
