WANTED: Volunteer writers for brand new west coast music magazine. Victoria and surrounding cities are briming with talented bands, musicians and industry profesionals and we think it's time Vancouver Island had a medium to showcase their talents. If you are interested in contributing to this magazine through music reviews, profiles, advertising, articles, photography, music listings etc. please contact us at [email protected]. We are interested in hearing any ideas. - Sun, 25 Jan 2004 7:34am

Smart asses who talk like they know a thing about music but have never picked up an instrument in their lives.

Oh wait. That's me.

Ah. Thatd be the life. A tie - silk-screened to look like piano keys, a pocket full of Rocktoria CDs and some damn good dental work.

"WANTED: Volunteer writers"

Great, we'll write for you, free of charge, and you can profit off of it. Sounds good. Unless the magazine is free, production cost covered by advertisements (like Vice), your idea is nothing more than festering leech on the under-belly of the local music scene. Industry profesionals do not need a medium to showcase their talent, for they have none, they exploit local talent and are basicly garbage wrapped in skin. Well i guess you could call that a talent, but it's one that i'd like to see wipped of the face of the earth. - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 11:02am

I heard that Daniel Lapp likes to do that kind of stuff. Apparently he likes to get musicians to work & collaborate with him and in return he gives them next to nothing and then he takes all the credit for their work. You gotta watch out for rip off artists. They are everywhere. - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 11:37am

Uhhh I sorta know the guy doing this. The Magazine is a free publication. He's not tryin to rip anyone off just trying to get something going. Offbeat was all volunteer based, and you slagged it for its content (which was somewhat lacking) but I think everyone will agree that no one was getting "ripped off" for writing in it. Sheesh you guys are negitive =) - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 12:18pm

Even if you make no money from having your articles published, it's a great way to gain experience if your looking to get into that type of work (I've had 2 articles published on websites, and had chess games published in a British chess magazine). - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 1:39pm

I think it's a shame that offbeat and Phat magazine have gone under, because there is a serious lack of publications out there. I'd do brand x in print if I could, but that's not going to happen, at least not for a while.

As far as industry professionals go - they do seem to bring to mind soul sucking bandits that ride the coat tails of the artists that in reality make the music.

"your idea is nothing more than festering leech on the under-belly of the local music scene." - Now that's a little uncalled for. Without press, how would bands get recognition? My only critisism with a LOT of canadian publications like exclaim, is that it is VERY rare to find a CD review that isn't totally complacent and uninsightful. They lack honesty. - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 2:59pm

Hey Jen, yeah its Kelly. He's fighting the good fight, plus come on there's always perks for writing for mag'z like this. Getting in shows for free to review, free CD's to review. So get on the bandwagon, and help make the magazine you wanna read!! (as I know how much alot of you complained about Offbeat!!) - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 6:01pm

Thank you all for your feedback. So here's the deal.. I have been actively involved in music for 10 years now (playing and promoting music) and have an absolute love for anything music. I was a fan of offbeat magazine and was upset when it fell apart because it was the Island's only pure music medium. Basically I want to pick up where it left off but add in a lot of stuff we felt it was missing. Advertising sponsored, yes, but definately not profitable to say the least. (It will be free)

By asking LivVic goers opinion of the magazine and asking for their help in creating this magazine we want to make sure that we are creating a medium for and by those who want to read it. Our editor is a professional writer and yes working for free also, all for the love of music. We will do the best we can and cover all we can but we can't do it without your help, so if you have some spare time and want the experience it is there.

Keep the comments coming, we can all learn a thing or two. - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 11:37pm
