Thrifty Foods has voluntarily withdrawn specified ground-beef products from its shelves following an E coli health warning issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The products can range family packs of ground beef to various burgers and stuffed peppers. No illness related to the meat has been reported.

The ground beef came from Prairie Heritage, a group of Western Canada ranchers, and was sold under the Alec Campbell Signature Series or ACSS brand.

Other types of ACSS beef such as steaks and roasts come from different sources and are not affected by the warning, nor are other brands of Thrifty Foods solid beef like Thrifty Foods Presents Sterling Silver Beef. But since both ACSS beef and Thrifty Foods Presents Sterling Silver Beef are ground in-store with the same equipment, the product withdrawal has been extended to all ground-beef products with a best-before date from Feb. 12 to March 12.

A statement issued by Thrifty Foods said customers can return any unused ground beef from that time period for a refund at the store where it was purchased. They are otherwise advised to dispose of it safely.

The statement also said the source of the contamination has not yet been pinpointed.

“It is our understanding that CFIA are continuing their investigation of how Escherichia coli 0157:H7 may have been spread through this particular batch lot and are currently examining sources of potential cross-contamination at the processing plants in which the beef was initially prepared for distribution to Thrifty Foods and other retailers.”

Thrifty Foods said the meat from Prairie Heritage is a specialty beef that is produced without antibiotics, means of artificial-growth or feed that contains animal byproducts.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled, according to the CFIA. Consumption of food contaminated with the bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage.

The retailers are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

For more information consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

Fairway could have a 100% chance of being tainted meat and they'll just throw a $1-2 dollar off sticker on it instead of recalling it.

I would still take my chances anywhere else. - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 4:24pm

"Could" have?
I always assume it does have it. No better way to build up immunity to pathogens than to eat them in small amounts every few days. - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 5:25pm
