It has been a repeating thread in a lot of posts that many people want Victoria bands to achieve some sort of top 40 commercial success because it will stimulate interest in Victoria as a whole. I have to ask why is this exactly? When I see Hot Hot Heat being signed (the current example), I see another band about to have their future destroyed (both bandwise and monetarily). Hell, watching the TLC episode of "Behind The Music" should make it clear that Albini's essay on the subject is far from an uncommon experience:

Personally, I have never heard of a signed band that has not been screwed into the ground by a major label and wanting that kind of interest seems totally counter productive to making art and having a good time (which presumably is why we are all making music in the first place). Some increased local interest might be minorly cool because that is what will get people out to shows (though probably not for anything other than bland top 40) but the last thing I think we need to foster is another Nickelback or Nelly Furtado.

What makes you think that commercial exposure is good for the Victoria music community? - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 7:16pm

Looks like a bug in the forum software, that should have appeared as posted by moron, not "-". - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 7:28pm
