*Shrug* It's a shafty sports bar, but all the good shows are there... I didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me.... Though I would never go unless there was a show.... - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 2:03am
Patron The covers are too high for absolutely unknown bands, and the beer prices are ridiculous. Pretty soon the club and bands will price themselves right out of opportunity! - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 2:10am

Cover averages $6. Almost always $5 for local bands (criminally low). You can buy a beer for $3.50 every day, jugs for $10.50 every Monday, sometimes other days. Doubles $5.75 every day, with at least one double special at $5.25. So fucking blow me you cheap ass skank. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 2:27am

- Well, perhaps correct on the shit sound... I've griped about that plenty already on this board.

staff always seem cool to me... and the bands frakly aren't that bad, especially the outta towners. And EVERYONE in vic ends up having to play thier requisite show at thursdays... hell, i've done it twice now.

BUT the real reason it sucks.... is cause its out in the middle of fucking nowhere. not literally, but if you're going downtown to party, thursdays just isnt on the map... therefore there is no "built-in" crowd, no real crowd walking in off the street.... face it, if you want to play at thursdays, you'd better call all your friends, because if your band ain't drawing a crowd, that bar sure isnt! - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 4:02am

Gallows End played with the Shivs and JAK Uzi a while back and there was a great crowd in there. The crowd actually included a couple of Soundgarden staff. (nice that the competitor is run by music lovers not greedy business folk!) We were treated and paid well, staff was freindly and the sound was good (drums could have been louder) Thursdays is constantly improving (stage, sound etc...)Obviously the sound isnt quite what it is at Soundgarden BUT you dont have to pay $200 for it at Thursdays. Being a metal band who sound is critical, I wont hesitate to play both places. Thursdays for the party with decent sound and Soundgarden so the Vic metalheads can pick apart our mistakes. haha. Soundgardens a fuckin party too! (just dont make me drink the draft......) - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 9:16am

Thursdays is a great place. The staff is always friendly and the beer is always good. The cover is the same as it is at every other bar in town. The sound system may not be huge, but it's not a huge venue. In the middle of nowhere? Don't quite get that one.

Bottom line: Stop bitching about venues sucking, cuz you'll really be bitching when no bars host live music anymore. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 9:43am

I'd say that Thursdays often hosts bands that probably wouldn't be playing in Victoria, given the size of the city and the difficulties in getting over here from the mainland, but every touring band I've dealt with, and most of the ones I've spoken to have had nothing but good things to say about Thursdays.
As for shit bands, that's certainly a matter of opinion... But for the most part, the larger shows (especially Malcolm's/SOS') feature touring bands of a higher calibre than some shitty Trooper coverband (or uhh, Trooper themselves) or the usual six fat ponytailed guy blues jams featured in most bars.
And soundwise, I've had no complaints, but maybe that's because I don't play in the second coming of Weather Report or run my Steve Vai guitar licks through eight rack-mount effects processors and a flange pedal. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 11:17am
Sticky Kola I have been playing at Thrusdays since 1999 and I can say that every thing about the place has steadly improved over the years, better room , better stage , and believe it or nor way better sound. Now lets get this straight these guys have been through some tuff times, just like SG is going through now ..I understand that at times its been doubtful that the place could even stay open...Chris and company have done a great job bringing a steady stream of interenting out of town acts for us to enjoy while at he same time allowing locals to get egual time on the stage.
In my experience the folks at the bar are all nice and very professional.. we always get paid unless Mcnallys Rant steals all the door money their fucking stars you know... we always get pissed and always have a great time!
In fact I'm really looking forward to our show on the 14th of March....see ya there!

Anonymous I don't particularly like it because the fucking beer line is too long because it seems they only have one god damn bartender on heavy nights with no waitresses. And I agree on the staff attitude. They seem very pretentious and cold. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:25pm
Snidebastard. OK look, here's what we will do. After the Limo picks you up at your door you will be wisked away to a convenient downtown location where you will be seated in you own Lazy-boy by a scantily-clad Scandinavian Hooker. She will keep you supplied with free all you can drink beer and shoulder rubs. You will have a free and unobstructed view with your own personal mix board so you can adjust the state-of-the-art sound system to your own personal preferences. The band will play a non-stop 6 hour set with guest appearances by the Heavy Metal stars of your choice who will come by and tell you how cool you really are. If by any chance you are not satisfied your twoonie will be returned plus six hours worth of interest for the use of it. Will that help? - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:33pm

Anonymous I love thursdays. This is a little cheesy, but they gave my band a shot when nobody knew us and nobody else would let us play. That first show was fucking amazing. We looked forward to it for like a month and finally for the first time got to play at a bar. Back then, there was no other place that would let you do that (like soundgarden today) Thursdays has always supported local music way more than anywhere. it's amazing they still do it when they cheap ass bastards like you whining about the door and beer. get a job. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:17pm
XY-SATAN Been to Thursdays only once and my wife and I were treated very well including getting let in after a misunderstanding at a sold out show including the owner buying us a drink and showing me around .Even though there may room for improvement(what venue couldn't). What I was informed of was the problems with licensing and bylaws to do with the closing up of areas in the club not the management or staff .

I'd like to thank the owners and staff for a very pleasant time and am looking forward going to many more shows there in the future. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:21pm

S.V. I really dig Thursdays. The staff are always friendly to me, and they have a great variety of music. The ambience seems to improve every time I go. Jo Fancy There's not been a decent argument against Thursdays or Soundgarden in any post within the recent uncalled for rash of venue slaggings this message board has played host to. It's uncalled for, unfounded & outrageously annoying. They are without a doubt the two most devoted punk/rock bars in town, yet they still get grief like nothing else. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 6:23pm

Anyone who talks shit about Thursdays is a fucking idiot and either is a) flamebait (in which case you win) or b) a wannabe who has no clue what it takes to put on shows and what most venues are like to deal with. I've been playing music in one way or another since 1989 and in all my years I have never come across a bar which has be consistently cooler to bands playing there (in Victoria or elsewhere) than Thursdays Pub. There is a reason you see established locals like Caroline Mark, Tolan, David P Smith, etc. playing there all the time - they are cool to deal with and all around nice people.

I personally consider Thursday's the guardian angels of live venues. There is nowhere else in Victoria that is remotely as open to what they will book (i.e. these folks actually like music), as affordable as far as fees go ($50 to the sound guy normally with the door to the bands), as liberal with band band beer and generally as friendly and helpful as these folks are. I have personally put on a bunch of shows there and except for one grumpy waitress who later appolgized and has been friendly ever since, I have had zero attitude and they have always been supportive. They bent over backwards to be accomodating with letting me set stuff up in the club and even when the place was fucking empty they have given the bands beer. I have never once felt jerked around or ripped off. Unlike just about every other venue I have ever played.

Chris has never been anything less than fully supportive of the local music scene and losing Thursdays would be a dark fucking day for independent music in Victoria.

Being staff at the one bar in town that actually does sort of compete with thursdays you'd expect me to come on here and hack them. Sad to say nothing could be further from the truth. They run a great room. Other than the Soundgarden there is nowhere in this city I'd rather go see a live band. Granted the sound isn't the best, but they have gradually been improving over time, and they are definitely getting better. I always have a great time there, and the staff and owners are great people. I also really like the fact that they do tend to book bands that no other room in this city would touch. I've been turned on to a few bands that I would of probably never even heard of otherwise. Keep up the good work. You take everyone that side of cook st. and we get everyone this side. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 8:28pm

Pic-toe county Pal...Thursdays has been my venue of choice way before the Loganberries grew over! nothing pretentious..cheap beer, decent cover, and a guarenteed good show anytime! This establishment has had a hard long battle to stay alive, many others failed , these guys are active members of the community trying hard to meet all demands, and please their dedicated followers, and it's working!Yes , it's off the beaten path , but that's what makes it a treasure to find! I agree with moron %100. The one gig I ever "promoted" was Eugene Chadbourne this last July. Not only did Chris say yes immediately to the show but he coughed up a pretty substantial guarentee (on a Wednesday!) to make sure it happened. The bar lost a bit on the door but it was no problem as it was a great show and Chris has always been the champion of the great show (all the while hoping that maybe the not-so-great shows make up the difference). They have been picked on mercilessly by the city and surrounding community for the most petty reasons and were, to my knowledge, the only bar in BC to be fined under the insane new smoking by-laws (and it was a doozy if I remember). The PA could be better, true, but it has improved on a steady basis over time and there is a core of good soundmen that know how to get the most of it (yes, yes I'm one occasionally too). Soundgarden is a great alternative to Thursday's because the two bars crowds AND artists don't really cross-pollinate that much, my personal tate leans to the bands that play Thursdays, but the times I've been to SG have also been enjoyable and I think it's a great club, especially for LOUD music (read:metal-ish). Both these clubs seem to be getting the third degree with respect to bylaw enforcement, but none of the big ones are. Hmmm. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 10:50pm
Anonymous i saw removal at thursdays a few weeks ago and it was one of the best gigs ive seen in this town.(and ive been going to gigs in this town for about 16 years)and i like soundgarden too. only the old and forever gone Harpos was cooler. we shall have to see what happens with the leon rouge (red lion) when they get back in biz.

Bertrand Russell Any bar that is not run by a no-necked pitbull in a shiny suit whose ego is constantly being caressed by his coke habit and his gang of sycophantic attendants (and shiny quilted-vested bouncers) is worthy of marked affection: Chris is, first and foremost, a good guy, who actually likes good music (and will lose $ to support it). Thursday's (either directly or indirectly) has their finger in the pie of each and every good thing that has happened to our city. I am glad that you made this stupid post so that so many voices can come out of the woodwork in support of the bar. Also: Fuck You. Thursdays has always had all the lighthouse products and even goes so far as to carry Matt Phillips' line of amazing hand-crafted brews. They have the best tap line-up in town as far as I am concerned. Prices are average for the quality you have to choose from. They also have cheap suds from shitty mass-produced breweries as well for all the un-washed out there. I drink locally because we have two stellar breweries that need our support. Kudos to the Logans for their decision to do this. Having a tall glass of rasberry-wheat ale on a hot summer's day was brilliant IMO. - Sun, 2 Mar 2003 12:38pm
