o.k. I just got back from the bar, which by the way is open. Now here's the story, and it's fucking weird. The building management are going through a bit of a court battle right now, which has absolutely nothing to do with the bar. So rumors have been flying all over the place about the bar getting shut down. Someone told the mayor today that soundgarden had been shut down. Thats right the mayor. So he said publicly that the bar was shut, without checking the facts. The zone then proceeded to pull the radio spots. Tamara had been out doing bar stuff all day, paying our buisness license and such, so she was totally in the dark about all of this. Around six o clock she got a phone call from the zone asking why the bar was shut down...
She of course didnt have a clue what they were talking about, so after hearing the whole story she proceeded to phone the mayor of victoria, at home no less, and yell at him for screwing with her buisness. Now the radio spots are back on, and the bar is open, but none the less a whole bunch of people all over the place are going to think that the bar is shut down now, and we get to be in the middle of yet another unecessary soap opera. I love this city sometimes........................ - Thu, 27 Feb 2003 11:59pm

"City bar shut down in blitz sparked by US tragedies". Looks like the "offences" were an "inadequate electrical permit" and an "inadequet business permit". It also mentions that the bar has "about $700 in outstanding tickets for bylaw infractions". The chuckleheads that run this town are such complete fools; rather than making it worthwhile for people other than homeless junkies to even be downtown after dark they have gone ahead and started their "blitz" of the local nightclub scene. Entering a nightclub is now a lot like trying to cash a third party cheque at a bank and the poor folks who are trying to run music venues are now being told that they can lose their business licenses AND liquor licenses if so much as one poster is found posted "illegally" with their name on it; even if it's obvious that the club didn't put it up. This is probably a result of the ever powerful club/hotel lobby in town trying to kill their competition. Don't forget that there were no new cabaret licenses issued in Vic for almost TWENTY YEARS because of this lobby. In a perfect world Lowe and his toadies would have us go only to Sugar (owned by a notorious character who has had zillions of bylaw violations at the scores of different clubs that have been at the same location for 20 years or so), or Legends which is, in my opinion, the most likely place for a person to get beat up at 2:30 AM in Victoria (owned by an old hotel family). Time to tell these clowns to lighten up and deal with the REAL problems with the city's nightclubs (outside violence, blatant drug dealings, etc.) - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 10:24am

Anonymous okay first off, its not like i am defending the mayor... but if you have 700$ worth of tickets, an insufficient building codes and electrical, and overcrowding problems(of which i've never seen, cause there's never anyone in there), and on top of that are having problems with minors don't you think there's a problem with that business.. now i know you all are gonna be fumed but look at every other establishment(ie, steamers, thursdays, etc...) what do these places have that soundgarden doesn't... experience in the game. I've seen club after club go through that place, though soundgarden is by far my choice out of the folly of clubs that have gone through there, the management seems very unprofesstional. When i was there a couple weeks ago, I went in for an all ages show and there was still beer bottle strewn everywhere from the night before, the tables were sticky, it smelled like a urinal puck. So to bring this to an end, simply put, soundgarden is a good place with good intentions but if you can't get building codes and electrical codes up to standard and can't pay 700$ worth of bylaw infractions I don't think it should be opened until they comply... which is what exactly alan lowe said.
"The Sound Garden on Store Street will open only when it complies, Lowe said" cut from the story you guys posted - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:00pm
Anonymous but the point is that Lowe is claiming it is shut down, when in actuality, it isnt. Thats bad for any business.. and the fact is, Lowe shouldnt be spouting off who owes what when and where until it is a bit larger an amount then a paltry $700 debt. Now it is on the front page of the TC that all this went down, and ultimately it looks bad on Soundgarden.. Id be a suing if I were them. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:11pm

What is there to sue about. Soundgarden doesn't have an adequate electrical permit. So Lowe shut it down until it complies. And the T-C reported it.

Maybe Soundgarden should shape up. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:31pm
Anonymous Yah fuck off Soundgarden. Your bar is a hole, you aren't up to code, and you owe the city money. What part of this is the mayor's fault? - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:35pm
Anonymous I'm confused...who do I believe? the times colonist and our mayor, who are both reputable or a bunch of stoners on some half-ass designed message board.

I hope Soundgarden did shut down...and I don't think anyone should be surprised that it did. Tardos run that place. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:35pm
Jo Fancy "What is there to sue about. Soundgarden doesn't have an adequate electrical permit. So Lowe shut it down until it complies. And the T-C reported it."
Are you fucking mental? They DID NOT shut Soundgarden down- that constitutes libel, which you can sue for as it has discredited their business. I think it'd be neat if they did, just for something to do. I don't see why there are so many people giving Soundagarden such a hard time. They've done no real wrong- more so lots of good. There's no other bar west of alberta that does all ages shows in Canada.

Did you just say that the mayor and the TC are reputable? I don't think I'm hearing you right. You really are confused man. Holy shit. The last thing anyone ever said of a local politician is that they're "reputable". Think again please. On another note, 700 clams worth of fines is small time bullshit compared to some other (unnamed) businesses in town that I know of that have racked up far, far more than that in real fines for things way more serious than electrical codes and shit. Point is, every bar has some shit like that in their past. It's practically impossible to be up to "code" 100% of the time. Not just bars but other businesses as well. The place I work at almost gets shut down every year for pretty much the same thing. It happens to tons of companies. It's part of the business end of owning something. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:46pm
Anonymous oh...well...my mistake, I guess if smoking illegal drugs in the establishment "after hours" is all part of owning a business, I was wrong - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:03pm
Anonymous not "here here", joey, but "hear hear". - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:08pm
Anonymous man, you people who are all about sueing something should get a fucking life... Oh and another thing about the "unamed" business' that have larger fines... they pay them off... and soundgarden can't pay a measly 700$? most clubs make that in a half a night let alone maybe even when they open and charge for cover... I find that amuzing that soundgarden claims to be doing so well yet can't seem to pay off a 700$ debt to the city, as well as have PROPER electrical and business permits... and for all intensive puposes the bar should be shut down if its not safe... and for you fuckers who are gonna say other wise, you are ignorant to the fact cause you listen only to those who own the bar and not the whole fucking picture... get with it, the bar is going downhill every bar through there does eventually... so get over it and find somewhere else to go... like you all say, business is business, and shit happens - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:13pm
Anonymous hey ross... i gotta little something to say about being up to code... NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE IF YOU TRY... there are a hand full of business' with improper code, but there's a bushell of business' with proper code(why? i thought you said it wasn't possible)... my family owns a couple business' in the downtown core and we are fully up to code. A friend of mine owns a computer store and he is fully up to code.. so for you to say that there's more than a majority of business' that are running under improper permits YOUR WRONG ASSHOLE AND I TAKE OFFENSE TO IT, BEING A SHOPOWENER AND CUSTOMER TO MANY OTHER SHOPS AROUND TOWN... its a battle of clubs/pubs not business' around town idiot - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:18pm
Anonymous i think they can't afford to pay the fines because they are losing business because good bands don't want to play there anymore because they always get ripped off. the only bands you have left now are the punk/metal bands (not that they are bad) just that most might not have the same draw - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:25pm
Anonymous The reading comprehension on this board is right at about the grade three level. The people who run Soundgarden are not the same people who manage the building. They are not in violation, the building owners are in violation. Most of you must still live at home with mum and dad and have never had to deal with asshole landlords or City hall bureacracy.....good luck when your time comes. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:39pm
XY-SATAN Losing a venue is bad no matter how you slice it .Bylaw infractions have been going on for time in memorial and is nothing new . But cheering on a closer of a club (and a young one at that) is one of the dumbest comments I can think of . Being that I've seen clubs come and go over the years, good clubs will flourish and the others fall by the waste side . So before ranting about how shitty a club is or how you hate the staff or whatever, remember this could be one less club for your band to play at or for us local music fans to go see some of the great talent we have to offer.
Inside bickering isn't helping the problem. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 1:50pm

The business licence is in fact perfectly fine. It was renewed yesterday morning.
Anything electrical is the responsibility of the owner of the building, not the tennants.
As far as fire safety is concerned, all three fire exits are accessable and clearly marked.
As for fines, they will pay them like any other business does. The fact is lots of other businesses in town owe a lot more than $700 and are left alone to pay it whenever they want.

The Mayor should not be making public statements when he doesn't know all the information.
All of you people who would watch a live venue go under rather than support it make me sick.

The club is still open! - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 3:28pm

Anonymous goddam it's one thing to sift through piles of pooey spelling and grammar but at least get the figures of speech right. they don't make much sense if you change the words, i.e.

"by the wayside" not "by the wasteside"
"for all intents and purposes" not "for all intensive purposes"

it reminds me of being in high school english class when the teacher would get the students to read aloud and there were always those few that would dictate words that weren't even in the manuscript; they would just throw in what they thought should be there. bring on the retorts about pretension and snobbery. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 4:49pm
Anonymous i think this has alot more to do with the building management and not with the bar. i happen to know who operates the buiding and know people who have had several dealings with them..they are not even close to reputable, the fines and any difficulties ensuing are most likely not the fault of the bar.. - Fri, 28 Feb 2003 5:30pm

A Dose Of Reality A: Soundgarden hands down is the coolest bar in town to hang out at. Thursdays is cool too, but SG has location, sound, stage, size. Name any club in Victoria that is better and Ill disagree. Lucky is too small. Steamers plays the same crap over and over and over, stage is tiny and there are posts all over the place. Every other club in town is filled with testosterone monkeys and plastic face sluts.

B: The TIMES COLONIST is hardly reputable! Global, who owns TC has a reputation CANADA wide as being dis-reputable. Go to the canada.com website and check out Victoria news. Those fuckers are so out to lunch they posted a pic of the back of a 10 year old sexual assault victims head, who lives in Errington. That town is so small, everyone and their dog is going to recognize the poor girl from her picture. The TC is so dis-reputable I had to fight them for 5 months straight to ensure that they didn't break a signed contract I had with them in regards to advertising rates. They tried and tried to illegaly nullify my contract. ( I won because they were wrong )

The TC may have been reputable once, but now they are owned by corporate tycoons from Toronto, they dont give a shit about their local areas. Trust me, I know many employees there.

C: The MAYOR of Victoria is reputable? Not according to Russ Francis! Look into the establishment in this city. Alan Lowe likes to ok building projects that fatten his own wallet and he has been caught tongue tied on a number of issues regarding city leader morals over the course of his term. The fact alone that he would try and tarnish a local PUNK/METAL/ROCK clubs name should be reason enough for anyone who is under the age of 35 to dislike him. I dont see him badmouthing any other clubs, and I gaurantee other clubs that appeal more to minors have had more infractions than SG has had.

A big HAHAH to Alan Lowe, who has ordered all local establishments who want a liquor sales license to apply through the city, and if the city says no, it wont get to the liquor board.. Fortunately, something like 19 businesses got their applications into the liquor board as soon as Campbell announced the new liquor laws. The liquor board pretty much ok's anyone. Look for a new Beer and Wine Store in the Douglas Hotel soon for starters..

Back to you party poopers who hack on Soundgarden. Go hang out at Sweetwaters then you schmucks. Or go live in a teepee up near Sombrio beach you smelly ass anti-social tabouli eater. Soundgarden has more going for live music than any club in this city, and you should support them for that. And so what if some POT ( illegal drugs?? what??? ) got smoked there at a PRIVATE party. Get the FUCK OUT OF VICTORIA if you have a moral problem with marijuana, because you are a minority. Id like to point out that I have smoked weed in almost every bar in Victoria over the last 15 years, from Harpos to Merlins, From The Forge to +iegos, From Champs to Wastelands, everywhere except Boom Boom Room which is a pile of shit .

So either support a club that is trying to make Victoria better for young people ( minors too ), who support independant msuicians, who give stage time to rookie bands, who have rap , rock, metal, punk, who open their doors to anyone regardless of race, religion, color, clothes, hair, facial peircings etc.. Try getting into some of the homie clubs wearing your docs and torn up cammies, or with a leather and a death metal shirt, or a purple mohawk and a torn old sex pistols tshirt with your studded punk vest on.

Another thing about Soundgarden is less fights. Less cops. Less asshole bouncers. Less stuck up rich chicks ( damn! ) Less rules ( coat check? FUCK OFF! )

So either support it or FUCK OFF and dont go there! - Sat, 1 Mar 2003 1:19pm

and for the record i've never seen a fight down at legends(not to say that they don't happen; cause i've heard of some good blood baths)i guess i'm too hammered by then to care :) but the reason for all the fights is maybe cause there are alot of people in the bar, and i garentee that if there were that many people in soundgarden as there is on a thursday night at legends... there would be just as many fights... mixing a huge crowd with alcohol always causes shit... and bottom line is nobody deserves a beating even if they're drunk - Mon, 3 Mar 2003 1:13pm
Tony Sullivan House of Blues, before it turned into Bar Victoria, was a trouble spot also, with Dimitri Gilbert working at the door. The Vic police knew all about his history, but did nothing to intervene when he attacked someone. More often than that, it was the victim who ended up in jail. At Oak Bay High, Dimitri tried to hold a kid down in the bathroom (a well known skater/artist), pulled his dick out, and tried to urinate on him. Lots of people have stories about that freak. - Mon, 3 Mar 2003 1:14pm
