Normally live albums are just a cash grab by either band or label; so much so that in a normal major label contract they don't count as "real" albums towards the fulfillment of a contract. They also became the prime examples of wretched excess; from the plethora of double live LP's of the early '70's to the 3 LP Yessongs and ELP sets to the horrible Chicago 4 LP set (with ONE new song) to the final culmination of expedient consumerism the gawdawful 5 LP Springsteen box they practically define profit taking excess. The best ones? Well, my favorite rock record of all time, just about, is the Who's Live at Leeds (especially the new remastered version with the 14 extra tracks). Ramones It's Alive is also great; all the Ramones you need if you're not a fan (but who isn't?). Worst ones? Howsabout Iggy Pop T.V. Eye live (worse than bootleg sound) and my personal whipping boy the Eagles live album (the 1st one) which was almost completely replaced by overdubs in the studio. - Fri, 21 Feb 2003 9:53am

Iggy Pop - T.V. Eye is a great album if you can get past the sound quality. And it wasn't a cash grab by the band or record label, as for quite a while it was only available as a bootleg and not an actual release. - Fri, 21 Feb 2003 11:49am

Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same.
No Quarter ahhh so nice.

Too cool because it was recorded in July of 1973 which is the year and month in which I was born. - Fri, 21 Feb 2003 12:25pm
Troutbreath Zippgunn... I agree with most of what you've said, I mean really who needs 15 minutes of crowd noise and applause, still there are some musical experiences that can only exist as live recordings. A studio version of Woodstock just wouldn't be the same now would it? I've recently rediscovered the Les McCann Live at Montreux Album that came out of the early 70's. And yes, Live at Leeds is perhaps the Who's best album. - Fri, 21 Feb 2003 12:36pm
