ok so a little while ago (new years, in fact) i had a little house party and we thought it would be fun to get the band together. i had been drinking scotch and beer since about 2:30 so by the time 10 o'clock rolled around i was pretty cut. none the less we picked up our instruments and started to play and guess what, i couln't play for shit. my fingers were too slow and i couldn't keep a beat and you could say i wasn't playing 'upright' bass. in fact, just to prove i was a real asshole i ended the set by chucking my guitar into the drums.

Now, i know that some people like to booze it up big time before a show, and i was wondering? HOW THE FUCK DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP TOGETHER? I guess it takes a lot of practice... and I think it makes a difference if the whole band is wasted not just one member..

Any drunk-half-the-time musicians care to respond?

Thanks and have a really nice day. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 10:47am
Anonymous being half-drunk-at-the-time helps a lot more for me than being drunk-half-the-time. i play a lot better when i've had enough to take off a just little bit of the edge, and i get into the music more. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 11:03am
Jedi Drink as a training tool for the mind. Focus on something challenging when drunk. If you drink to party with the boys, stop! Try to master video games, martial arts, surfing, snowboarding, as long as everything is freestyle! Be safe and dont get carried away, one step at a time.

I have practiced that kind of excercise with several substances with varius results.

Warning: The state of mind I'm talking about has freaked some people out because I appear to have an invisible force controlling me.

I am not sugesting use of drugs and alcohol!!!! Only adding personal experiences to someone elses question. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 12:59pm

I love beer. I hate drunken rhythm sections. Beer is OK in moderation. Hard booze is bad for your music. Once someone videotaped me playing a show where I was plastered and thought I was playing great. We watched the video immediately afterward and it was, pardon the expression, sobering. I never got hosed for a gig again (well, almost never; don't play in Belgium if you like beer as much as I do). - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 2:36pm

As a general rule, ML7 doesn't drink before shows. Me and Tony are the exceptions to the rule though.
I get into the show more after 6 or so. Playing abilities aren't affected. More vodka = more evil. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 2:59pm

try drinking before jamming. if you practice drunk, your gonna know how to play drunk. also, if you're an alcoholic like someone I know, who shall remain nameless *cough cough* myself *cough cough* you can pretty much do anything drunk.
p.s. I don't drink before work. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 3:02pm

HAH! You lie, and hey, I should come up there soon and drink with you, it's been ages. How was it when Nick and kelly came up? any stories envolving a really drunk Nick? - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 3:19pm
jackass I can't play drunk cause my hands start moving slower than my brain, which is actually operating considerably slower than my hands, so you can see my problem...nothing wants to cooperate, plus it's hard to sing backups when all your words are slurred.

I can't play baked either, cause I'm always forgetting what note I'm supposed to be playing at that instant, usually cause I'm either thinking about the last note I just played, or the one coming up. In the end, it's all just one big brain fart and not very effective.

I agree with that Myka guy though, I bet if you practice inebriated, you'll get used to it. That's if the other people in your band don't fire you first for being a total fuck up. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 3:34pm
Anonymous Save the party for AFTER the show! It's your job!! Would you go to a regular job drunk? If you have to drink, have a few to loosen up, and party after. So much more rewarding that way, and you can remember how fun it was performing. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 3:40pm

you should play in the Alcoholic White Trash, we'd teach you how to play drunk. I'm actually kind of surprised I didn't know there was another way to play. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 4:42pm

Some of us are effected very differently by various types of booze. A.Tequila makes me Evil, fast.
Rum and beer makes me slow and sleepy.
Brandy with red wine is great for improvisation
Bourbon makes me free flowing but too sloppy.
Gin helps me relax into a Jazzy mood.
Morphine turns me into a strategic wonderking.
Doses-hahahahahaha Master of Reality! rarely.
Cocain - great for first 24 hours Only!!
Herb - good in small amounts
Vodka - cleanest booze for your liver - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 4:48pm
Jedi oh and Meditation can do all the above with practice and past memories working together. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 4:56pm
Anonymous There's nothing like a good morphine break during a Jazz session.

Meth is like coke, after 24 hours the recovering time takes too long. Wears the mind down yet some still claim it makes them a god. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 4:59pm

Well sir, a job is a situation where you work for money on the basis of making a profit. Playing music in Victoria does not entail that by any means. On the odd night you make a few bucks, it just goes back into the band which you've spent thousands of dollars each upon.
That is why you gotta look at playing music as being "for fun". Fun includes intake of various things for some.
If you can play tight (or at least reasonably well) when doing this, then why not? - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 5:08pm

So.. what you're saying is practicing drunk makes perfect drunk, i should try new things while under influences, playing music ain't work, the comedown off coke is shitty, vodka is evil, and i can get drunk for free by meditating???

OK thanks, makes sense to me.

For clarification...vodka isn't evil in itself. It just makes one evil just as rye makes one stupid.
Damn I love that shit!!!
*Drunken playing is not a recommended solution to tightness and should only but attempted by alcoholics.* - Tue, 18 Feb 2003 5:28am
