Can anyone help? Here's the deal;

I tried to update my Windows Media Player & because my copy of Windows is not "genuine", I cannot access my media player & burner. It just brings me to a page that says "your copy of windows is not genuine, buy genuine now" & will not let me go further.

Does anyone know if i can just un-install the last attempted update & recover access to ALL my cd's & burner?

If anyone knows, & could explain in the most basic of layman's terms hoe to do this, that'd be really really cool!

Thanks alot! - Tue, 26 Dec 2006 1:32pm

Removing any prior updates is going to do nothing. Get a genuine copy. - Tue, 26 Dec 2006 3:28pm

Agreed. The media player update was just the introduction of the software that does the authenticity checking. Without SERIOUS surgery, this will not be recoverable.

I recommend you backup all your important shit now, before Windows itself decides not to start anymore and you will be forced to phone MS to even get into your stuff.

The last time I looked at this for someone, introducing a genuine copy over top of the non-genuine didn't quite satisfy it either. In the end they phoned MS directly and purchased Windows. If I recall, they said MS sent along instructions for continuing to install over top and recover. (Ie. I don't THINK they had to blow it away...)

If you do get locked out, you will have no FREE choice exept to setup a second computer (with a good copy of Windows of course), and install your existing HD into that machine in order to copy off your files.

That genuine advantage shit is becoming pretty nasty.

A search for 'Genuine Advantage Hack' on Google will reveal some things, however I'm not sure if these procedures work once your computer has been registered as non-genuine. I think these are to shutdown Windows Update ability to find it out before the determination is made.
I could be wrong though.

If you updated an illegal copy of Windows, you're an idiot and deserve to lose all of your info.

That's like taking a stolen car back to the lot for repairs. - Tue, 26 Dec 2006 4:25pm

Thanks for the info Shaggy & Lonemonk, however, I found some sorta "rollback" feature that allowed me to recover all my stuff. Probably a temporary fix but I'm happy for now.

G-man. Thanks for the positive & productive input. You rule! - Wed, 27 Dec 2006 9:32am

Listen, if you're stupid enough to update a stolen copy of Windows, you deserve a slap in the head. You want me to give you advice that will help you out in the future?

Throw your computer in the ocean - you're simply going to fuck it up again and again. - Wed, 27 Dec 2006 1:59pm

I was actually joking before when I said you rule, but now I mean it!

I didn't realize I was running a copy of windows that isn't genuine. It came with the used computer I bought. So I'm sorry if there is a way to recognize that, but I'm way too busy writing killer, killer music.

& which ocean did you have in mind? I wouldn't want you to slap me in the head for choosing the wrong one. - Wed, 27 Dec 2006 2:29pm

Yes, I do rule.

I suppose it's slightly less idiotic to buy a computer running Windows without a Windows CD.

In any case, until you actually install a working copy, I'd suggest you consider any work you do on that computer to be temporary. It could be lost at any time.

In the worst case scenario, Windows will eventually stop allowing you to boot the computer and the only way to retrieve your info will be to contact Microsoft (good luck) or have someone fish it out of the drive on another computer.

Cheap copies of XP can be found at any used computer outfit. I would strongly suggest getting one and reinstalling if you are at all concerned about keeping your computer work. - Wed, 27 Dec 2006 2:57pm

I can, and my copy of Windows 2000 is far from genuine. (with mine, you don't have to enter a code when installing it). But you want to get away with using Media Player and use WinAmp a lot more. - Wed, 27 Dec 2006 8:05pm Edited: Wed, 27 Dec 2006 8:06pm

Name/Alias, please heed my advice and copy all important stuff off NOW. No matter what, your computer is compromised and will die one day without warning. Don't make me tell you I told You So!

Griph: be careful of such confidence. If MS decided tomorrow to monitor Win2000 licenses that just might put you in the same boat. Even if your gear last another year Griph, when you next redo your installation, Windows 2000 will be (almost is) useless, with no driver/security support. Windows XP/Vista will be the only options and both of those are monitored like mutherfuckers.

Lastly, Anyone who rejects MS updates simply to avoid whats talked about here is in bigger trouble, because 100,000 people will enjoy using your computer for all sorts of purposes.

Microsoft no longer has to ask you to apply updates. Read the fine print.

This applies to anyone running Windows. Either bite the bullet for a Mac, or run FreeBSD is my advice. I admit I am running Windows, but I will not be surprised in the least if some of my software squeals on me.

I dunno, I mean I have all 4 service packs so I'm not too worried (and I can check Windows Update). Besides, if that were the case someone would write a fix for it. Even though Microsoft would rather you ran Vista, they still support the OS. Hell, I know people that still run Windows 98. - Wed, 27 Dec 2006 11:46pm Edited: Wed, 27 Dec 2006 11:47pm

I know its inevitable to have to buy a copy, and that im lucky it hasn't expired... but just to let you guys know its not impossible to run a hacked copy. Just be careful what you use and when u use it! - Thu, 28 Dec 2006 5:24pm

Not that it's illegal - that s/he updated it. These days, most software companies' updates include checks to see if your copy is legitimate so using illegally copied software for anything you value is foolish.

And it was more of a metaphorical head slap anyhoo. - Thu, 28 Dec 2006 6:12pm

Kinda like a nerd slap. The kind where one would like to slap someone but is too nerdy and wimpy to do it.
Even if they did, the biggest workout they've had in the last three years is right clicking "save image as" on a 'Motherboards Get Nekkid' site.
I am also running illegal XP and the time has come to back up and install some other free copy. Maybe I can pay a meth head in old bike parts to lift one for me. - Thu, 28 Dec 2006 9:39pm Edited: Thu, 28 Dec 2006 9:43pm

Maybe you should use the grey matter in your skull and just get a copy with a corp key so you don't have to keep reinstalling due to a shit key? - Thu, 28 Dec 2006 9:50pm

Eventually you will.

This kind of brings up a larger picture. Non-free software is just that. You actually are not free to do what you want even with legitimate copies. Anyone ever read the terms of agreement? It says you don't own shit and the manufacturer can cut you off for any reason, at any time. Not very friendly is it?

Now this is only for the truly geeky around here, and I would admit this guy is pretty extreme in his views, but here is a talk about the principles of free software vs non-free software. It also talks in depth about the nature of copyright and how that is being used against you every day.

It also contains topics dear to my heart of Printing and the age of old-school printing presses. Also talks about something I have been concerned with recently in eBooks, which threaten to take away your right to ever re-sell a book or give one away to a library. I'm a book lover, so this is actually more worrisome to me in the long run.

I don't know, I've run this copy for over 2 years and nothing. I've also done Windows Update so many times I've lost count. But I see your point, M$ wants us all to run Vista so they might stop support, BUT there's too many businesses running Windows 2000 and Windows 98 still so it's hard to say. - Fri, 29 Dec 2006 4:07pm

since its inception.. Ive had to change my key only 3 times, and my current key has been working for the past year, all updates all the time, all so damn easy, I use the Mike Devlin Key Changer when Ive needed to( Google it, no not the TC guy..)

Dont ask me what the key is though I aint sharin! muahaha

Ive actually owned a few XP Home's too, but I sold them off since Pro works so well. - Fri, 29 Dec 2006 5:43pm

Why Mr Dumbass? Could it maybe be that even if you were being serious about getting some streeter to rip a copy off for bike parts, the key would be reported as stolen and you'd be in the same boat, or worse, when that known stolen key attempts to hit winblows update?

Shithead. - Fri, 29 Dec 2006 8:18pm

Shaggy, obviously thats what Stallman would like as well. Even a lot of software that certain Linux variations include with their installations aren't free-software when it comes down to it. Just because something runs on Linux doesn't make it free.

GNU/Linux however was the basis for an operating system which was originally designed to be free-software in every sense of the word. Certain factions of the Linux movement did not continue along that path.
.
Griph/Hell: The XP corp keys do not require further validation (like Genuine Advantage bullshit).
.
Anyone interested in the topic seriously, check out the link, or any other based on Stallmans rhetoric. Software/Patent/Copyright freedoms will be one of the great fights of this century. Not as big as control of Water, but still...

You don't need to break into a corporation to get a copy with a corporate key. I've got a couple corp keys, and didn't have to break into an office to get them. Like I said, use your grey matter next time your 'searching' for a new copy to download.

And calling me a geek is hardly an insult. It's actually a term of endearment. Someone's still living in the 90's it seems. - Sat, 30 Dec 2006 12:27pm

Sorry to derail, but I don't think my question is worth a new thread and since you're all congregated here at once, I was wondering whether anyone knew how to give people links to different sections on this site and still have the header (and other frames) come up. If I go to a section or to a thread and right click and copy that link it only opens up to the page, and people won't realize that its within the context of the entire site. It doesn't usually say LiveVic anywhere.

Any ideas? - Wed, 3 Jan 2007 4:43pm
