Cheers to books!

Just finished reading 'NEVERWHERE' by Niel Gaiman, was really good, though no 'Amerian Gods'.

Now reading 'Hitchhickers Guide To...' and still trying to get through Noam Chomsky's 'Hegemony or Survival'. - Mon, 6 Dec 2004 2:27pm

Don't Panic! HitchHikers Guide is one of my all time favs. I just finished reading 'Ismael' by Daniel Quinn. It has some very interesting ideas on the development of human civilization and why it makes such a mess. There is also a website for discussion and Q and A by the author. http://www.ishmael.com

Yep, I'm a Douglas Adams junky as well. Have been since 1980 or so. Still listen to all the audiobooks every night. Good to fall asleep to.

I just finished a World History of Opium (Can't remember the author)
and "Bass Culture (When Reggae was King)" by Lloyd Bradley. Both are very informative.

Hey ML7, the HHGTTG game is out on the net for download (Not entirely legit though). I think the original D. Adams website has a Java version of it online as well.

right now "who killed kurt cobain?". the answer is pretty obvious, he killed himself, and the authors are just trying to make more money (they had a previous book) but nonetheless its well written. Before this i finished "jim morrisson: life and legend" i think thats the title, anyway, brilliant book written by a credible author. And if you havent yet read "heavier then heaven", cobains bio, its amazing. I have a literary fetish for rock bios. - Mon, 6 Dec 2004 4:14pm

Reading an article on the wonderful Salton Sea right now in Harper's, which is a pretty cool rag except for their pompous editor Lewis Lapham, who, although his heart is the right place, writes WAY too grandiloquently to get his point across in, say, two paragraphs, as opposed to the 2-3 pages that he requires to churn out all these classical references and vague, lofty platitudes, which means gay gay gay. And his son married Mulroney's daughter!!!! Um.......ew?
I like to rotate H. with the Atlantic Monthly (closer to centre, but still definitely left-leaning) and the New Yorker (ignore the yuppie-scum ads - probably the best writing I've come across).
Just before I go to work I like to read another page or two of Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Archipilego", to get me in that upbeat mood. - Mon, 6 Dec 2004 5:07pm

Just finished "Purfume" by Patrick Suskind. Deadly. Natalie if you hav'nt read it I think you would like it. The Pro, well Antagonist depending on how you look at it, is like a rock star. Also after reading the book I wrote a song about it. Then while trying to think of a name I realized Kurt wrote the "Scentless Apprentice" about this book.
I just started the Silmarillion again, for a quick read untill the next pick. The always good power metal bible. - Mon, 6 Dec 2004 6:52pm

Also, Gene simmons autobiography is pretty decent-hes pretty damn arrogant though. Half the book is about how many women hes slept with. Its like literary porn. Always good. Rawr. haha. A while back there was an intense metal band in Nanaimo named Nibiriu. All their songs were based on the works of Zecharia Sitchin.

Dharma Punx? How is that any different than say, Krisna straight edge or Christian "punks"? Won't affect whether it is a good book or not of course but the last thing we need more of is bloody religion. And punk and religion are mutually exclusive IMHO.

I just read "Ivan Petron: Russia Through a Shot Glass":
http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=1-1891053833-1

Pretty cool biography of a hobo type fellow that gives an interesting view of the seedier side of life in cold war era Soviet Union. Scored second hand from Ditch Records. . .some cool books show up there.

Now working through the latest Gibson book "Pattern Recognition":
http://www.williamgibsonbooks.com/books/pattern.asp

Not sure yet how it will hold up but so far it is interesting.

Although you seem to be intelligent, your name says it all - try reading it before you judge it you fuckin hack, it's more about a persons life and the shit they have been through, and alot about the westcoast punk scene in the late 70's-80's and what it is like living hard, and what has become of his life and experiences, not trying to sign you up for the fuckin movement or anything. Don't even think about posting shit talk back to me until you show some respect. How can a simple book discussion bring such rats from the woodwork? Fun stuff. Bring it M.F. I fuckin thrive on it. A little defensive there KK?

From his site:

http://www.dharmapunx.com/

"Fueled by his anger and so much injustice and suffering, Levine now uses that energy and the practice of Buddhism to awaken his natural wisdom and compassion

Noah is now a Buddhist teacher in training with Jack Kornfield and the teaching collective at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA. He teaches meditation retreats nationally as well as leading groups in juvenile halls and prisons around the San Francisco Bay Area."

Note that his site also trying to get folks to start / join "meditation groups" around the States (i.e. convert others to religion). As I said, the book may be a good read but on the surface I am not so sure I see any difference between what he is working towards and straight-edge Krisna cult stuff or Christian rock types for that matter.

Another quote:

"I am sharing the importance of meditation, prayer and spiritual exploration, in a medium that is easy to digest, emotionally moving and even entertaining."

For the record I think the "12 steps" are equally dangerous in the long run since abrograting responsibility to a "higher power" is a way to avoid being responsible for your own actions.

The blurb is worse than the book Jay, I think we all know I am not about to join 12 steps, or start meditating outside of gigs or hand out fuckin pamphlets or something, I read the book and I am still among the darker side of Tibet, and I read the book and have not changed. God forbid {well maybe I am brainwashed after all} we actually enjoy a little spirituality once in a while, or a different perspective with an open mind. {And a closed fist}

Yo One After Two -- I'm only about 90 pages in, but so far it is pretty interesting. The book (as far as I can tell) is all about how the human race got to where it is in terms of warfare, conquest, food production, the spread of epidemics, rise/fall of various civilizations, etc. It doesn't really touch (so far) on European/Anglo-Saxon history, but moreso the rest of the world - excluding Antarctica. I'd definitely recommend it based on what I've read so far. - Wed, 22 Dec 2004 1:58pm
