I was chatting with someone today about Rifflandia, and they asked about some of the bands I mixed over the weekend. Specifically, they asked what kind of music Run Like Hell plays, and I really didn't have a clue what to call it. Technical Metal?

So I thought it was a good idea to find out just what sub- genres exist in our fractured community.

I put the question out there, both to Mr. Hell and to the rest of the LiveVic scene. What genre is your band, and what makes it so? - Tue, 28 Sep 2010 7:41pm

For RLH I tell people it's metal with chunks of rock in it.
For Rotterdam I say heavy rock with chunks of metal and southern rust.
For Acorn Hell I say you tell me. - Wed, 29 Sep 2010 12:43pm

I've always had a tough time with that question. Lately I've been calling SYN{A}PSE Alternative Progressive Rock but we have touches of punk, metal, ambient, post-rock...I feel like you have to go all out and name 8 sub-genres or just say 'rock'. - Mon, 4 Oct 2010 9:23am

I find that people are usually put off by long, complicated descriptions. It's usually best if you can keep it down to one or two words. If you're hard rock/industrial/synth-pop/funky, just say you're a rock band or something. If you just fit your self into rock, metal, roots, blues, or one of the main over-genres like that, people will want to listen. When I hear Rock Band I think "I like many rock bands, I'll take a listen." When I hear "Alternative Progressive Rock Band" I think "what the hell does that mean." That one's actually not so bad, but I've heard a lot of pretty ridiculous genre classifications. Or when people ask what bands you sound like, you have to keep it very vague or you end up saying things like "50% White Zombie, 50% Fred Penner."

Cole Grifter is dark pop alt rock, but that description is rarely useful unless you're talking to people who are really into music not just from the listening POV.
I guess it's different if you're marketing to a niche group of people, but not for bands like Cole Grifter, Year of the Rat, or SYN{A}PSE. - Mon, 4 Oct 2010 11:13am

"Hard Wave" is only 2 words ;) I think it sounds good from a marketing perspective, though when people ask what it means I says "Dirty Synth-Rock" .. - Mon, 4 Oct 2010 12:16pm

hey,
'Run Like Hell'... the band i share with Mr. Hell on bass and "B" on drums isnt what i would call "technical metal" as in we dont have too much wanking noodling stuff going on.
we did play the rifflandia thing w/ the Dayglos and of course there were alot of people there who are more into the punk side of things.
This is why we played the show.
We were hoping that the crowd there would like what we do.
It seemed that many in attendance did and we were very happy about that.
The music we play is more like Heavy rock/punky metal with a bit of thrash stuffed in there....
call it what you will.
I'd like to see some people come out and see us on oct.15th at Logans and tell us what they think!
I'd like to believe we can appeal to many who just like energetic music.
We do our best to entertain and it gives us alot of pleasure doing so.
Come on down and check us out.
We are not just another metal band....we are Run Like Hell!
Hope to see ya there! - Wed, 6 Oct 2010 12:31am Edited: Wed, 6 Oct 2010 12:32am
