Brand X Hugo I've been trying to hunt down some zines throughout the city. Ditch, the comic stores, etc. Places that used to have an excessive amount of them all over the place, but the past while it seems they're sort of dying out. Do any of you guys know of any zines or zine publishers that are still going on, in THIS city?

I don't know of any Zine publishers who are doing hard copy stuff in Victoria. I am helping to put up new website though, that is a "Digital Magazine". The address is http://www.invisibleairline.com It is very new and doesn't offer a plethora of content yet, but there is currently some cool streaming video and "eye candy" there. Our intention is to include local columnists, artists, businesses etc. and also, to encourage and publish the voice's of people in the community. There is a "contact" link on the homepage and we encourage people in the community to email us with ideas about what they would like to see on the site. Our goal is to be as creative as possible, offering relevant content in a multimedia package, that is both informative and pleasing to the senses. So, if you have any ideas about what you would like to see, as it relates to Victoria and the Island, please let us know via the link. - Mon, 9 Dec 2002 5:10pm
Brand X Hugo Yeah, I've seen the site and acutally have a little correspondence with one of the creators, but specifically I'm talking about zines in the glustick/scissors/xerox machine sense. I used to have stacks of them, from throughout the years, but my friends are petty thieves. - Mon, 9 Dec 2002 9:39pm

I did Mystery Meat for a few years. I guess I just ran out of time to do it. Joining bands and getting married are a surefire way to kill a fanzine! - Mon, 9 Dec 2002 9:55pm
Brand X Hugo Yeah. I figure that's what happened to most of the older zine publishers. Younger kids don't seem to do much of that sort of stuff. I blame the internet. - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 4:04pm
[email protected] The fact that when i write i'll start off talking about one thing then by the end of the article i'm talking about something that has nothing to do with the orginal subject. Thats what stops me from writting a zine.

i could make one devoted to complete randomness, but who the hell would read that? - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 6:15pm
ella ah,i put my name in the wrong spot.. hahaha! - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 6:20pm
Brand X Hugo Mine didn't make too much sense. but that only seemd to make the fan mail that much more bizarre; band-aids, painkillers, photos (one of which was a polaroid of a guy with a sausage in his ass), mixed tapes etc.

But at he same time there were a lot of harsh feminists and neo natzis that wanted my head.

I'm not sure which aspect was more fun - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 6:41pm
ella hmm.. that sounds mighty interesting Hugo. We should talk.. - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 8:07pm
... Perhaps kids have heard the phrase "Just because you could make a zine, doesn't mean you should make a zine" too much and it has discouraged them from creating something like a zine. More likely, it's the Internet that has killed the print zine, I'd say. It's a real shame that so many people keep personal webpages, online diaries, or even online magazines; they should be printing their work up onto something more permanent. I would encourage everyone who keeps a website to take out their gluestick and scissors and put that shit down on paper. Sure, a website may be cheaper and (arguably) easier to make and maintain, but print zines are so much more tactile and can be more enjoyable to look through. Websites are so much more disposable... - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 8:20pm
Brand X Hugo You've got a good point. Web pages aren't permanent, and when they disappear, they're not only disposed of, they just don't exist. I still think people like to be able to have something they can keep in their back pocket, and not have to turn on a machine to view it. I like the digital medium mostly for the multimedia aspect, and besides, I've gone through enough glue and X-acto knives throughout my teenage years.

I've been thinking of adding a D.I.Y resource section to my web site. for indie publishers, musicians, and maybe even some kind of pirate radio guide.

What do you guys think? - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 8:49pm

i wrote a few zines, the most widely-distroed being 'for lack of a better world'. don't even have personal copies left and all the originals got water-damaged. had interviews, reviews, stories, drawings, mostly pure smut. standard cut-and-paste style. haven't put one out in a couple years due to having a job..that shit took TIME. - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 9:04pm
('...') I used to do a zine called pussywhip. It was pretty fun, I'd actually sell them to shops around BC and Alberta for extra cash while hitchhiking. Not that anybody should make them and expect any money back. I'm talking the occasional cheeseburger and pack of cigarettes.
I too have lost all of my original copies, due to the imprisonment of my "distributer" - Tue, 10 Dec 2002 11:25pm

I keep telling myself that I'm gonna do another, but finding the time is such a bitch.

Brand x Hugo xorox money?....or beer? xorox money?....or beer? xorox money?....or beer? xorox money?....or beer? xorox money?....or beer? hmmmm...That's basically what it came down to for me. - Wed, 11 Dec 2002 10:53am

Brand x hugo I meant xerox, not xorox, as in xorox the infamous martian overlord, who was overthrown last year by neeplox.

Yeah xerox. - Wed, 11 Dec 2002 2:03pm
J. Jacobs I know this post is a little off time, but I think a DIY section would be great, we definitly need more of that kind of shit going on in Vic, seeing as we lag so behind Seattle and Vancouver on that level. Good Luck - Sun, 15 Dec 2002 5:07am
kate the only problem with making zines' is the cost. a good quality xerox can be way to expensive, and making enough to distribute can cost around 100$ - Sun, 15 Dec 2002 4:06pm
Brand X Hugo Well, If anybody out there is still making zines, let me know...
